✨ Bhima Koregaon: A Symbol of Pride & Resistance ✨

On January 1, 1818, the Battle of Bhima Koregaon took place between the Peshwa army and a small force of British East India Company soldiers, including a significant number of Mahar (Dalit) soldiers.

⚔️ Despite being outnumbered, the Mahar regiment and British forces defeated Peshwa Bajirao II’s army, marking a pivotal moment in history.

🏛️ The Bhima Koregaon Stambh (Victory Pillar) was erected in 1851 by the British to honor the fallen soldiers. This monument holds special significance for the Dalit community, representing a victory against caste oppression and standing as a beacon of equality and empowerment.

📅 Every year on January 1, thousands gather at the pillar to celebrate this victory and honor the courage of those who fought.

The Bhima Koregaon Stambh is not just a piece of history—it’s a living symbol of resistance and Dalit pride that continues to inspire generations.

When I was in school, history fascinated me. Yes, those times saw conflicts, but they didn’t have the missiles, atomic bombs, and technologies capable of mass destruction that we have now. People didn’t just kill—they now possess the means to obliterate, to wipe out nations, cultures, and human races without a trace.

We often boast about how much the world has changed and developed. But we must ask ourselves: is this really the progress we desired? Is this “development” truly better, or is it far more dangerous than we can even fathom?

In this age of advanced weapons, divisions over territories, casteism, and race, it’s becoming more apparent than ever—the world desperately needs to learn the teachings of Buddhism. To understand that all these divisions, all these claims over land and identity, are temporary. Peace is not a choice, it’s the only way forward.
