Shoot a Short

A Short Film is simply not a smaller version of a Feature Film, but it ‘s an independent form of storytelling in itself. Short films are an excellent way to express your ideas and experiences. The short film seeks to be a learning experience by providing an opportunity for engagement in film production within a limited budget (or sometimes zero budget) and resource constrains. A filmmaker can aim

to make a short film to demonstrate his/her talent and abilities. In a wider perspective a short film also can express purpose of convincing financiers and production houses of the filmmaker’s potential to make a longer project. This workshop aims at developing a new perspective to look at short filmmaking and learn the right approach and fundamentals of making your own short film. Course Structure of the Workshop

About the Mentor
Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni started his filmmaking career as an assistant director with noted filmmakers Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar for their feature films and documentaries. He was selected as the only Indian Student for the summer University course in LA Femis, Paris, in 2000 following which he joined the Film and Television Institute of India, where he specialized in Direction. His Diploma film Girni (The Grinding Machine) won the president gold medal for best short film and best direction in the year 2005. His short documentary ‘Three of us’ premiered in Berlinale 2008. His first feature film Valu (The Wild Bull) along with the other two films, Vihir (The Well) and Deool (A Temple) were premiered in Rotterdam 2008, 2010 and 2012 resp. were extremely successful with critics as well as common audience. He has directed short films among which Gaarud (The Spell) and Vilay (Dissolution) have been screened in important short film festivals like Oberhausen & Clermont Ferrand. He also produced Masala (Spices), which released in March 2012 and is currently co-producing Pune – 52 which is in postproduction and is expected to release in January 2013. Recently he won the Golden Lotus for best Indian feature film at the 2012 National awards for Deool (A Temple). He and his creative partner Girish Kulkarni have a founded a production company under the title of ‘Arbhaat Films’ to produce films primarily in Marathi Language but with a universal appeal.
