📅 Let's read the next four months of the year using phonics!

Instead of memorising these words, let's decode them by breaking them into syllables and applying the phonics sounds and spelling patterns we've learned.

⭐ May → May (1 syllable)

m says /m/.

ay says /ay/.

⭐ June → June (1 syllable)

j says /j/.

u-e (Magic e) says /oo/.

n says /n/.

The final e is silent and makes the u say its long sound.

⭐ July → Ju • ly

Ju: j says /j/, u says /oo/.

ly: l says /l/, y at the end says /ie/.

⭐ August → Au • gust

Au says /or/.

g says /g/.

u says /u/.

s says /s/.

t says /t/.

✨ Breaking words into syllables and applying phonics patterns helps children decode longer words with confidence instead of relying on memorisation. That's how strong, independent readers are built!

Many children memorise these words, but they can actually decode them by applying the phonics sounds and rules they already know.

⭐ January → Jan • u • ar • y

J says /j/.

a says /a/.

n says /n/.

u says /yoo/.

ar says /ur/.

y at the end says /ee/.

⭐ February → Feb • ru • ar • y

f says /f/.

e says /e/.

b says /b/.

r is silent

u says /yoo/.

ar says /ur/.

y at the end says /ee/.

(Notice that the first r is silent.)

⭐ March → March

m says /m/.

ar says /ar/.

ch says /ch/.

⭐ April → A • pril

A says its long sound.

p says /p/.

r says /r/.

i says /i/.

l says /l/.

When children learn to split words into syllables and apply the phonics patterns they already know, even longer words become easy to read. That's the power of phonics! 💜💛
