The talk will argue that for a majority of scientists in this field a great future awaits if a collective attack is launched against societal problems. The inter-institutional group is a very welcome development especially since it is informal. We need to recognize that instead of being proud, possessive and presumptuous, it would benefit everyone to be polite, prudent, and proactive.

Organizer's note: A few organisations in Pune – specifically, SPPU SCMS and Statistics, IISER Data Science, and FLAME Computer Science departments – are starting an informal Data Science Colloquia Series. These talks will typically be held every first Thursday of the month and the venue will vary between these departments. The present talk is the inaugural talk of this series.

Abstract
‘As the COVID-19 pandemic wrecks havoc all over the world, reliable forecasting of the pandemic has been one of the most challenging things to do. Compartmental modeling offers reasonable estimates to the spread of pandemic enabling better preparedness. We present here an advance 9-compartment model that is one of the most rigorous models for COVID-19. Using India-specific parameters as well as transport network we simulate the propagation of the disease across the country. We analyze the effects of various types of lock-downs as well that of testing and quarantining measures on the infections. We demonstrate that the most effective way to cull the epidemic is lockdown coupled with effective testing and quarantine. We will be presenting our insights from this model.’
