India the land of festivities.
We celebrate following certain specific rituals but do we really share with our children the mythological story that is significant with all the festivals ?
Time to tickle the little curious minds. Let them know the story and understand the meaning of the festivity.
:
Onam or Thiruonam, usually held in August and September for 10 days, originated in Kerala as a celebration to remember the golden rule of King Mahabali, a mythical king who ruled over Kerala. The legend holds that jealous of King Mahabali's popularity and his power, the Gods conspired to end his reign. They sent Lord Vishnu to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali to the netherworld. But Lord Vishnu granted the king's sole wish i.e. to visit his land and people once every year.
However, there is an alternate legend which talks of founding of Kerala by Parasurama, again an incarnation of Vishnu. It holds Onam as the day on which Parasurama created Kerala from the sea-bed by throwing his battle-axe into the waters.
People lay a flower carpet, traditionally called ' ', in front of their house to welcome the King and mounds representing Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in the courtyards. Snake boat races, Onappottan, Kaazhchakkula, Puli Kali, Kaikottikkali and other traditional rituals are performed followed by a lavish feast called 'Sadhya'. Onam also means new clothes for the whole family, sumptuous home-cooked delicacies on banana leaves rounded off by a cup of sweet Payasam.
The ten days of Onam are called Atham, Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradom and Thiruvonam.

Who can forget 2020??😊
The year which made us look 🧐at everything differently. Isn’t it?
The year that taught us the importance to know our life skills. We survived days without house help, cooked our own meals👩🏻🍳, took care of our hygiene🧘, learnt to do our own task……
But are we bringing up our children where they have learnt these important life skills?🤔
Preschool is the right age where they can start picking up these skills. Along with scholastic skills it’s also important for the children to learn to carry their plate🍽️ to the kitchen after finishing a meal.
Often the mistake that we make is when we consider them to be too young to pick up daily skills. We think that the tender hands👐 or the shoulders will not be able to bear the burden of responsibility. But it’s not true. 🙂
Children learn or pick up skills by observation👀, by encouragement🤗, by recognition🤩 when a skill is being displayed by them and by making them responsible😇.
3 year old Sara loved her ‘green friend’🌱 the little tomato plant that grew in her kitchen garden. While her mother watered💧 the plants every day, she left few pots for Sara to take care of them. She had a small sprinkler can which her little hands could hold when filled with water. Her mother told her that if she took care of them and nurtured them every day, then one day they will be grateful to her and gift her with red tomatoes🍅. But she needs to be careful, patient and must be responsible to take care of it every day. Sara didn’t need any reminder to take care of her friends as she followed her mother when she saw her watering the other pots. Finally the day came when the yellow flowers bloomed and little tomatoes🍅🍅 sprouted. Her happiness knew no bounds as she her patience, perseverance paid off. She learnt to be responsible, caring, nurturing, patient, indirectly also learnt that act of gratitude and gratefulness.
Talk 🗣️to the child about the importance of a skill and why it needs to be acquired.
The little helping hands👐 can –
✓Put away toys after play 🧸🪆
✓Help in making beds in the morning🛏️
✓Help with the laundry🧣👚
✓Water the plants🌱
✓Be caring towards a friend in need🧑🤝🧑
✓Be responsible towards own self and safety🧘
The list can keep growing when nurtured well after a skill is acquired.
As the list grows tall into a blooming tree🌲 so does a child 🧒🏻into a good human being.

2. 3 year old Aarav sees his peers jumping and bouncing on the trampoline. His beaming eyes👀 caught his other friends sliding down the slide. His legs 🏃carried him with excitement towards the park. He was brimming with confidence. Soon his hurried steps found him atop the slide but doing it for the first time he couldn’t maintain his balance and almost slid down quicker than he mounted on the top. A puzzle and confuse look😳 on his face as he was not prepared with the kind of experience received.
As he is still building on his vocabulary so he couldn’t express his astonishment over the result which was unexpected. His lips started to tremble and his eyes swelled🥺 and started overflowing. His father who accompanied him to the park picked him up, pacified him🤗, spoke to him and soon could see a small little hand up in the air trying to reach the big protective hand to give a high five🖐️ – a gesture which says – let’s go buddy, let’s try it out again.
In his second attempt – he took careful steps👣 holding the rails to climb up, sat down and then holding the rails carefully slid down letting himself smoothly touching the ground. His father just stood next to him, encouraging him through the process. Whatever he achieved was by the sheer belief that was instilled in him that – Yes! He can achieve it.
Often our over protectiveness and constant words💬 of caution prevents them from making any mistakes, which to some extent hinders the process of learning.
What can a parent👨👩👦 do??
✓ Be with the child👶🏻 and help him while he is learning new skills
✓ Praise the child and encourage him to take initiative to learn or try something new
✓ Focus🧐 on the child’s strength
✓ Allow the child to make mistake☺️
✓ Avoid using harsh words🤬 or naming a child which lowers his self esteem
The little seeds🌱 of encouragement which we sow at tender age makes them grow🌳 into a confident human being.
