Work in progress.
This piece explores the layered geometry and quiet depth of a stepwell—where every line becomes a trace of a time when water was valued, preserved, and shared by the entire community. These spaces were more than structures; they were living, breathing cultural hubs.
Through this work, I’m reimagining these forms in a contemporary context—inviting a pause to reflect on water, something so essential that its absence is almost unimaginable.

It was on February 12'th 2024 that we - Sergio Gomez Artist, Drew Harris and I, recorded a podcast early in the morning (IST). It was the coming together of three artists from three different countries - Sergio from USA, Drew from Malaysia and I from India.
And talk we did about my art project -Stepwells, challenges for a woman artist and art. In this conversation, we touched on the genesis of the project, the challenges of creating a cohesive body of work, and the exciting journey ahead. This podcast still resonates with me and I love listening to this again and again.
Join us as we navigated the intersection of art, history, and cultural exploration in my artistic world. Tune in for an engaging discussion on The Artist Next Level Podcast at:

Had the privilege of speaking to an inspiring group of business leaders in my city about a subject deeply close to my heart — the stepwells of India.
Through my work, I’ve been exploring these incredible architectural forms not just as historical structures, but as living examples of creativity, sustainability, and community-centered design. Long before modern infrastructure, these stepwells reflected a profound understanding of water conservation — harvesting rain, managing scarcity, and creating spaces that were both functional and beautiful.
What fascinates me most is how creativity wasn’t separate from necessity. It was embedded within it. Every carved pillar, every descending step carried both purpose and poetry.
In today’s fast-paced, consumption-driven world, revisiting these ancient systems reminds us that innovation doesn’t always mean something new — sometimes, it means remembering what we once knew.
Grateful for the thoughtful conversations and the opportunity to share this journey.
Some artworks aren’t created in a moment—they are constructed, layer by layer, line by line, thought by thought.
This architectural painting is one of them. Built slowly, almost meditatively, each stroke adds to a larger story. Scratch by scratch, detail by detail, the structure begins to breathe.
Stepwells are never simple. Every level, every turn, every shadow carries intention. This one—located at Loni Bhapkar in Baramati district—is especially fascinating with its L-shaped layout, unfolding like a quiet labyrinth.
During the monsoon, it transforms. What seems like stone and geometry becomes something deeply inviting—cool, reflective, alive.
It takes countless hours to translate such complexity onto paper. But somewhere in that process, patience turns into beauty.

While exploring the ancient ruins of Karnataka, I stumbled upon the mesmerizing Pushkaranis - structures that are as functional as they are breathtaking.
What began as curiosity turned into a deeper journey across India, uncovering similar stepwells in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
These architectural marvels—wells with intricately descending steps—aren’t just water reservoirs; they’re a stunning fusion of design, symmetry, and purpose. The deeper I looked, the more I noticed the hypnotic geometric patterns unfolding within them, almost like nature and mathematics in perfect dialogue.
Each stepwell tells a story through its carvings, structure, and form—different in detail, yet united by a shared architectural rhythm. Inspired by their brilliance, I’ve started translating their essence into art, using textures like jute to echo the organic, fractal-like growth found in these spaces.
A tribute to the past, reimagined through creation 🎨

Lost in time at the Stepwell of Loni Bhapkar, Baramati 🌿
Right after the monsoon, everything felt alive — lush greens wrapping around ancient stone, and a quiet stillness broken only by the gentle ripples of greenish-blue water. I spotted tiny turtles swimming about, completely at ease in their little world… a moment so simple, yet so grounding.
This place has left an imprint on me — and I’m excited to share that my next artwork is inspired by this very experience. Stay tuned.
💦💧On this World Water Day, I was reminded of the quiet power of community and tradition.
As I travelled into the heartland of Maharashtra, I witnessed something truly special—a stepwell beside a Shiva temple in a village in Parbhani district, lovingly restored by the locals. Funded entirely by their own efforts, the space was transformed with intricate rangolis and illuminated by countless diyas, creating a sight both sacred and inspiring. 🪔🪔
These stepwells are more than architectural marvels—they are timeless rainwater harvesting systems, designed to sustain life through harsh, dry climates. It’s remarkable how such ancient wisdom continues to offer solutions to modern challenges.
👏🙌Only in India do you see heritage that not only stands the test of time but continues to serve communities in the most meaningful way.

"Mapping Stepwells: A Visual Narrative" — a journey that found its voice beyond the gallery walls.
Grateful to have my solo exhibition at Monalisa Kalagram, Pune (June 2024) receive thoughtful coverage from leading publications including Deccan Herald, Times of India, Indian Express, and others.
The exhibition brought together paintings, photographs, a video installation, and a storyboard tracing my exploration of stepwells — not just as architectural forms, but as living reservoirs of memory, culture, and time.
Each piece was part of a larger narrative—mapping not only physical spaces, but personal encounters, histories, and the quiet poetry embedded in these structures.
Thankful for the recognition and for everyone who engaged with the work, in print and in person. This journey continues.
