🎨 One mistake is stopping your drawings from looking realistic...

❌ Pressing too hard too soon!

Instead, build your artwork like this:

βœ… Start with very light pressure
βœ… Add multiple thin layers
βœ… Increase colour gradually
βœ… Burnish only at the end

✨ Realistic colour-pencil art isn't about forceβ€”it's about patience and layering.

The more control you have over pressure, the smoother and richer your drawings will become.

πŸ“Œ Save this reel and try lighter layers in your next artwork.

✏️ One habit is making your realistic drawings look like cartoons...

❌ Outlining everything with black!

In realism, edges are created by light, shadow and smooth colour transitions, not thick outlines.

Try this instead:

🎨 Blend your colours into the background
πŸŒ— Let shadows define the edges
✨ Keep some edges soft and some sharp
πŸ‘€ Observe your reference before adding any outline

The fewer unnecessary outlines you use, the more realistic your artwork will look.

🎨 Want your drawings to look more realistic?

Here's one secret:

πŸ‘‰ Realism comes from CONTRAST, not just more colours.

Instead of adding every red pencil you own, focus on:

βœ… Darker shadows
βœ… Brighter highlights
βœ… Strong light-to-dark transitions
βœ… Clear focal points

When you increase contrast, your artwork instantly looks more 3D, vibrant and realistic.

🎨 One of the biggest realism mistakes?

Using the same pencil strokes for every texture.

Different surfaces reflect light differently, so they also need different drawing techniques.

✨ Here's a simple guide:

🐱 Fur β†’ Short directional hair strokes

🌸 Flower Petals β†’ Soft circular blending

πŸͺ΅ Wood β†’ Long strokes following the grain

πŸ’Ž Glass β†’ Smooth gradients with crisp highlights

The more you match your pencil movement to the surface, the more realistic your drawings will become.

✨ STOP using white pencil for every highlight!

If your highlights look chalky, dull or like white spots sitting on top of your drawing, the problem may have started much earlier.

For realistic highlights:

βšͺ Preserve your brightest paper areas first
πŸ”΅ Add lighter colours around them
🎨 Build your midtones gradually
🟣 Add dark values last
✨ Keep the transition around the highlight soft

Remember:

The brightest highlight is often the paper you DIDN'T colour.

Plan your highlights before you start layering!

😩 Why does your colour-pencil drawing still look GRAINY?

Those tiny white gaps aren't always a sign that you need to press harder.

In fact, pressing too hard too early can make layering even more difficult. ❌

Try this instead:

1️⃣ Start with very light pressure
2️⃣ Build multiple thin layers
3️⃣ Change your stroke direction
4️⃣ Gradually increase the pressure
5️⃣ Burnish only towards the end

✨ Remember: Smoothness comes from LAYERS, not FORCE.

❌ STOP using black for every shadow!

One of the easiest ways to make colour-pencil artwork look muddy is adding black too early.

Instead, try building your shadows with colour:

🌸 Start with the local colour
❀️ Add deeper reds
πŸ’œ Introduce purple
πŸ’™ Add dark blue to the deepest shadows
πŸ–€ Use black only when it's actually needed

Remember: Dark doesn't always mean black.
