TIFA Artist Feature - Dimitri Shabalin

Dimitri Shabalin is a mask maker from Moscow, Russia. Dimitri began his creative journey in 2013 when visiting his mother; he used his old childhood toys and some of his mother’s jewellery to make his first mask. At the time, he was working as a Fashion Editor at Numero and Interview magazines. Dimitri crafts bejwelled sculptural masks that can be worn as accessories or exhibited as wall art. He uses a wide variety of materials from jewellery to old toys and memorabilia, a unique way of upcycling, where the old meets the new and behind the jewelled facade is a more meaningful evocation of the past. Dimitri seeks to give a new lease of life to the pieces he collects; reawakening the era they come from and telling the stories of their owners through his masks. He is fascinated by old civilisations and has a particular intrigue for Soviet era memorabilia, and the social and political experiences of that time. He approaches his work as an archaeologist. Dimitri hopes to inspire creativity, curiosity and an adventurous spirit through his pieces.

The bright, sometimes defiant, sometimes even frightening masks of the artist Dmitry Shabalin are in demand among collectors and are successfully sold at modern art auctions. In his hands, household items are formed into fantastical fairy compositions that you want to look at and consider.

He says “Because a mask is a full-fledged piece of art, with its own history and mythology, and only then an accessory. For me, this is a reflection of my state here and now, an imprint of the moment, collected from improvised objects. At the same time, a collage and a portrait, which, as an art object and a trophy, can decorate the space of a house, filling it with new meanings.”

TIFA Artist Feature - Cho Gi Seok

Cho Gi Seok grew up knowing he wanted to be a creative. His career began working with Korean fashion brands as a graphic designer, art director and set designer but “in my mind, I wanted to use all that to create my own images” he explains, “so I started doing photography”. Today, Giseok works in Seoul, and his myriad creative interests are apparent across his multifaceted portfolio.
“Photography is attractive to me because it is a medium that can coordinate and synthesise the whole thing,” he explains. Giseok’s images are a testament to the fact. His series’, although sitting largely in the world of fashion photography, are rich thanks to his employment of props, and set design. “There are many possibilities [in photography] to be used, such as clothing, fabric and installation etc.”
It’s an approach which has seen the photographer work with clients like Adidas, Dazed Korea, Vogue Korea and Crash magazine.

TIFA Artist Feature - Jesu Moratiel

Jesu Moratiel is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation and sculpture, photocollage, painting and 3D animation. His eclecticism deepens the intrinsic characteristics of the materials in which he works: the conservationist and insulating nature of the resin as time capsules contrast with its transparency and brightness. As for the digital work, he is interested in its artificial and ephemeral aspects, lost in the archaeology of the network and the flatness of the pixel and LED screen.
The thematic bulk of his work revolves around four fundamental pillars: life (and as a consequence, death), s*x as the original phenomenon of life, the influence of science and technology in contemporary society as well as the configuration of social relations. Moratiel explores the artistic and anthropological record of universal cultures, their myths and beliefs, to configure the origins of human concerns. These topics are proposed from a very personal point of view, marked by traumatic experiences such as the double separation of his parents and the premature death of a lover.
Jesu’s main series reflects on the anthropocene and its environmental impact on nature and its communities.
