AKSHARAYA AKSHARAYA - Letter Conscious People “Katha” – the story
The journey of Aksharaya began in 1990, with two Indian teachers.

With a humble start of workshops and camps, Aksharaya has today become a beacon of achievement and inspiration to many. It is the unconditional contribution, love and efforts of its founder that has led this organisation to find a place of respect and become a source of learning for its members.

'Ichha'- the motto
The history of Indian scripts dates back 5000 years. In India, 10 different script

s are identified from which are derived 22 languages (spoken and written). Through Aksharaya as an organisation we aim for the three E’s: Expand, Educate and Explore. Expand- promote 'letter' as a concept and its forms. Educate- aware the people, both professionals and students, giving them opportunities learn and appreciate through various activities like camps and workshops. Explore- research and development of Indian script, calligraphy and typography

'Karma'- the work
Interestingly, all Indian scripts follow a common phonetic system. Thus, it is assumable that there still lay many hidden facts that the world including us has still to discover about these scripts. So to rightly connect these Scripts & their culture through intention, thoughts and philosophy there is a need for an organization- Aksharaya. Its contribution is to work in (concept) Letter forms and its related issues, Script study, Calligraphy, Type Designing, Typography, and also Literature (in relation) being some of the many fields. But while its vision remains vast, its mission begins with identifying and connecting various resources to the people.

I am really sorry to hear about dear friend Hanif Kureshi’s passing. He sounds like he made a significant impact on the Indian design community and inspired many with his work. Losing someone who contributed so much can be incredibly difficult.

Those projects sound amazing and truly reflective of his creativity and vision. Street Art and hand-painted type have such a powerful way of connecting with communities, and Daku must have been a fantastic initiative. It’s clear that he had a unique ability to blend art with cultural storytelling. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of designers and artists.

Losing a talented figure like Hanif Kureshi leaves a void in the community. His contributions not only enriched the design landscape but also inspired so many. It’s important to remember and celebrate his work, as it will continue to resonate with others.

Typography Day will be held online for the fourteenth time on 27th and 28th of August 2021 hosted by IDC School of Design (IDC IIT Bombay ), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) with support from India Design Association (India Design Association) and (AKSHARAYA)

The theme for this year's event is 'Hope and Typography'

The event will feature workshops on Typography and Calligraphy followed by conference dedicated to 'Hope and Typography'. The international conference will be devoted to addressing issues faced by type designers, type users and type educators. The conference includes presentations by invited keynote speakers, eminent academicians, industry professionals, research scholars and students. The event will also host an exhibition of selected posters from the Poster Design Competition.
The event is planned over two days:

Day 1-2: Workshops on Typography and Calligraphy + Conference focusing on ‘Hope and Typography' + Exhibition of Typography Posters on Expressing Hope through Typography
