Why do our mobile numbers have 10 or 11 digits?
Why not five? After all, a number with five digits is an easy number to remember.
Let us assume that a country’s government decided to introduce a law that only allowed five-digit mobile numbers.
Most countries have over a million people living in them. Each person having a cell phone means that many people may get the same number.
How does this work?
In a population of a million people, there are only 1,00,000 ways in which a five-number having digits 0 to 9 can be combined. There won’t be enough numbers to assign to so many people.
10-digit mobile numbers give a person 10 billion combinations, which is still more than all the people on earth.
So in case you want a new number, you needn’t worry.
Also, some countries use 11-digit mobile numbers. So you’ll never be worried about a cross-connection.
