ಅನಿರ್ವಚನೀಯ ಆನಂದ ಅಂದ್ರೆ …… 90 ದಾಟಿದ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಹಿರಿಯ ಪುರಾತತ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಡಾ. ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಮನ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಈ ಸಲದ ಪದ್ಮಶ್ರೀ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದು!!!
ಇವರು ವಿಶ್ವದೆಲ್ಲಡೆಯ ಪುರಾತನ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ತಾಣಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದ ಮಹಾನ್ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ!

ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಪ್ರಾಚ್ಯವಿದ್ಯಾ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾಲಯದ ತಾಳೆಗರಿಗಳ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ದ ಮಿಥಿಕ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ ನೆರವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ನಿಮಗೆಲ್ಲ ನನ್ನ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ತಿಳಿದಿರಬಹುದು. ಈ ಯೋಜನೆ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಮುಂಚಿನಿಂದಲೂ ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತ, ಸದಾ ನಮ್ಮ ಯೋಜನೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಚಾರಿಸುತ್ತ, ಸಲಹೆ – ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತ ಬಂದವರು ಡಾ. ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಮನ್! 92 ರ ಈ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸಲ ಯೋಜನಾ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ನೆಲಮಾಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಓಡಾಡಿ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿ ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತ ಬಂದವರು ಈ ಮಹನೀಯರು. ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಹೋದ ಹಲವು ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅವರ ಸಲಹೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು ಬಂದಿದ್ದೂ ಇದೆ.
ನಮ್ಮ ಯೋಜನೆಗಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆಯೇ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕ ಡಾ. ರೋಹಿತ್ ಈಶ್ವರ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರೊ. ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಮನ್ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಡಾ. ರೋಹಿತ್ ಅವರಿಂದಲೇ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಮಹನೀಯರ ಪರಿಚಯದ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಒದಗಿದ್ದು!
ನಿನ್ನೆ ತಾನೇ ತಾಳೆಗರಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಕುರಿತು ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಒಂದು ದಿನದ ಸಂಕಿರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಾ ಅವರಿ ಇಡೀ ದಿನ ಒಂದಷ್ಟೂ ಆಚೀಚೆ ಹೋಗದೆ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಹಾ ಎಷ್ಟು ಉತ್ಸಾಹದಿಂದ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು….. ಇವತ್ತು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪದ್ಮಶ್ರೀ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಘೋಷಣೆ ಆಗಿದೆ!!!
ನಾನು ಈ ಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯನಾದಾಗ ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಯೋಜನೆಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬೆಂಬಲ ಸಿಗುತ್ತೋ ಅನ್ನೋ ಆತಂಕ ಇತ್ತು. ಆದ್ರೆ ಡಾ. ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಮನ್ ನನ್ನ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಿ ಧೈರ್ಯ ತುಂಬಿ ಯೋಜನೆಗೆ ದಾರಿದೀಪವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ವಾರವಷ್ಟೇ ನಾವು ಯೋಜನೆಯ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವನ್ನು ಹಿಗ್ಗಿಸಿ ಡಿಜಿಟಲೀಕರಣಕ್ಕೂ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈಗ ಈ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯು ನಮ್ಮ ಯೋಜನೆಗೇ ಬಂದ ಹಾಗಿದೆ!!
ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂತಹ 80-90 ದಾಟಿದ ಹಲವು ಮಹನೀಯರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪದ್ಮಶ್ರೀ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯು ಅವರನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿದ ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿತ್ತ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಘನತೆ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯ ಗೌರವ ಮತ್ತೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯ್ತು. ಪ್ರೊ. ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಮನ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಹಾರ್ದಿಕ ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು. ನನ್ನಂತಹ ಪಾಮರನಿಗೂ ತಾಳೆಗರಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಹೇಳಿದ ಅವರ ವರ್ತನೆಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಸಾಷ್ಟಾಂಗ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರಗಳು.

• 1951 : Masters degree in Chemistry from Madras University.
• 1954 to 1961 : Worked in Archaeological Survey of India, Chemistry Branch; conservation of mural paintings in Ajanta and Lepakshi.
• 1961 : Higher training in Restoration of Works of Art, Central Institute of Art Restoration , Rome.
• 1961 to 1966 : Worked in A.S.I. - Conservation of Belur, Halebid temples and Lepakshi.
• 1966 to 1975 : Set up the Conservation Laboratory of the Indian Museum, Calcutta, and headed the Laboratory, conserving a large number of Museum objects of different kinds. ( Worked in the British Museum Research Laboratory, on conservation of antiquities for 4 months in 1969, on deputation from Indian Museum.)
• 1975 TO 1987 : Deputy Superintending Archaeological Chemist and later Superintending Archaeological Chemist- Head of the Southern Region of the Chemistry Branch of A.S.I.
- Supervised conservation works at Ajanta, Ellora and all monuments in the southern states.
- Devised a special technique for the separation of two layers of mural paintings in the Brihadeeshwara temple, Thanjavur, and preserved the separated Nayaka ( upper ) layer after remounting on fibre glass support and the exposed Chola layer in situ. This work attracted international attention because it was the first and only time that rows layers of old paintings had been separated like this and on this scale, anywhere in the world.
• 1977 : Headed a 15 member team to Bamiyan, Afghanistan, when the conservation project of the two gigantic Budha statues was completed and the monuments formally handed over to the Afghan government.
• 1982 : Was part of the A.S.I. team to Angkor Wat, Cambodia, for detailed study and preparation of project report for the conservation of the monument and prepared the Chemical conservation part of the report.
• 1983 : Headed the team for the conservation of the Churches of Old Goa and a number of different kinds of art objects in them on the occasion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
- Attended some international as well national conferences and read papers.
- Published a number of research papers in reputed journals
• 1987 : December - retired from A.S.I.
Post retirement
- A number of consultancy works and the conservation of the main deity, Panduranga Vithala’s stone image.
- 1991 : Prepared the State of the Art report on the conservation of mural paintings in India for the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.( The report was printed and widely circulated among scientists and conservators.)
- 1992 : Worked for a year in the Brindavan Research Insititute, Vrindaban, ( Mathura ) supervising the conservation of Palm Leaf and Paper manuscripts.
- 1993 to 2006 : Director of INTACH Chitrakalaparishath Art Conservation Centre, Bangalore. Responsible for the conservation and restoration of a large number of art objects of different kinds both for individual owners and institutions. Carried out mural painting conservation projects in Tamilnadu.
- Worked for the National Mission for Manuscripts, Government of India in helping in the preventive conservation of mss in many institutions and also in curative conservation when necessary.
- Was the State Convener for Karnataka in the National Survey of Manuscripts in 2005.
