National Science Day (also known as Rashtriya Vigyan Divas) is celebrated in honour of the great scientist and Nobel Prize winner CV Raman. He is best known for his work in the field of light scattering.

The day is celebrated on February 28 to commemorate his eponymous discovery for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize, the Raman Effect which is the change in the wavelength of light when a beam of light passes through a transparent material.
