Students of Class VIII from Oysters International School, Mohammed Wadi, Pune, visited the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) Library along with their teachers as part of an educational tour. The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to library resources and demonstrate the role of libraries as secondary sources of information for research and learning.
At the outset, Dr Bhakti Gole, Librarian, welcomed the students and teachers. Ms Tejal, a PGDM student representative, delivered a brief presentation on the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) and its PGDM programme.
Subsequently, the Librarian introduced the students to the various types of resources available in the library, explaining their significance in research, information retrieval, and academic learning, including both print and digital media such as e-books, e-journals, databases, etc. The session also covered basic search strategies and tools used for locating information effectively. Mr Shantilal Ahire, Assistant Librarian, highlighted a range of open-access resources available on the Internet, with special emphasis on resources useful for school students.
The students then toured the library and participated in a series of activities designed to help them understand how to locate books and search for information independently.
A special display was organised to showcase the evolution of information storage devices over a period of time. The display included a videocassette, projector slides, microfiche, a Fuji Microfiche Reader (RFP2), diskette, floppy disk, microfilm reel, cassette recorder, audio cassette, CDs/DVDs, pen drive, and external hard drive. In addition, a variety of reference and information sources were exhibited, including a sample annual report, dictionary, directory, magazines, journals, abstracting journals, encyclopaedias, handbooks, yearbook, atlases, maps, and research reports.
The students were delighted to see such a diverse collection of resources and technologies in one place. They enthusiastically participated in the activities and showed keen interest in learning about the different information sources and tools available in the library.
At the conclusion of the visit, the teachers expressed their appreciation to the entire library team for providing a meaningful and enriching learning experience for their students. Notably, this was the first educational visit by a school to the NIBM Library, making it a memorable occasion for both the students and the library staff.
