Around 20 years back, I started off my career as a Trainee Engineer with a metal stamping company supplying to Tata Motors. Those days, the automobile industry was growing with increasing volumes of Passenger cars. I found myself enthusiastic due to my learning but responsible phase of my career and got very supportive mentors which led to an interesting journey through challenging times.
Nowadays, things have changed to such a large extent that in spite of proper learning infrastructure in place, newcomers are finding it difficult to grasp the practical knowledge and build themselves to get ready to fight against more challenging situations than earlier.
The main reason is more emphasis on class room training instead of OJT (On-Job-training) methods. Classroom training may create interest to understand topics but limit the application of learning in practical. Moreover, mentors are hired from outside who do not have insight into the company's culture, resources and processes.
Another reason is the interest of freshers to learn and apply the concepts to maintain and/or improve the things. On the other hand, internal mentors must be willing to share their experience. This may be limited due to fear of sharing knowledge or time availability due to routine work load.
Getting a good job opportunity and finding suitable candidates is another challenge these days.
To overcome these challenges, let’s get together and create a learning environment for mutual benefits. I have chosen two digital media - YouTube and Facebook for creating a community of engineering professionals and growing it further with your support.
