India Loses WTO Solar Appeal Against US - As It Should. Next, India's WTO Solar Case Against US | Home | Arthniti 27/02/2018

On the blog: Kavya Joshi writes on the solar trade war between the US and India.

"There is a certain amusement going on at the World Trade Organization. The argument is between India and the United States over the local content rules for renewable energy projects. In 2013, U.S brought a complaint before the WTO arguing that the domestic content requirement imposed under India’s national solar program violates the global trading rules. To promote the production of solar energy within the country, the government under the program agrees to enter into long-term power purchase agreements with solar power producers, guaranteeing the sale of the energy produced. However, for a solar power producer to be eligible to participate in the program, is required to use certain domestically sourced inputs. But such local content rules are not allowed. Thus, the shouting match between the two countries."

Taking a look at the FRDI Bill | Home | Arthniti 24/02/2018

On the blog: Vikramsinh Patil explains the FRDI Bill, and its impact on the nation.

"It is no secret that our banking sector has, for a considerable period of time been in the doldrums. ‘NPA’ has become an all too familiar acronym synonymous with a public sector bank that is unable to recover its (quite substantial) dues from its debtors leading to heavy provisioning and unhealthy balance sheets. Against this rather grim background, we have a new piece of legislation which seeks to implement a protocol to deal with a financial institution on the brink of failure."

Behavioural Economics: A study into the irrational human rationale | Home | Arthniti 22/02/2018

Harsh*ta Vaddadi interviewed Michael Norton, social science researcher and professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and author of "Happy Money: The New Science of Smarter Spending".

An excerpt: “One of the biggest current challenges is in understanding how to create longer-term behaviour change, especially for behaviours that require self-control. Defaulting people into more optimal retirement savings is an important and impactful innovation, but we also need research helping lower-income people (who do not have retirement savings plans) to make the choice to save on an ongoing basis, taking money from each paycheck. The same is true for topics such as weight loss and healthy eating.” - Micheal Norton

Getting to know Dr. Deb: a candid chat with SSE’s Deputy Director | Home | Arthniti 21/02/2018

On the blog: Kamakshi Sirpal's candid chat with Dr. Debdulal Thakur

"Dr. Debdulal Thakur has recently become a part of the SSE family, silently steering the ship from his third-floor office and providing his invaluable guidance to every student who walks in. In a conversation with Dr. Deb a few days ago, the people at Arthniti got the opportunity to learn about his background, right from his childhood days to where he is currently and his views on the same. Sir grew up in a remote town located between Assam and Bhutan, where he used to spend most of his time exploring the tea gardens and riding his bicycle through the hills. He likes to think of it as a “green childhood” and wishes for everyone to experience what he did. Despite spending his subsequent years in big cities like Kolkata and New Delhi, he tries to stay connected to his roots, and recently visited his hometown with his daughter to reminisce the days of his youth."

Being Unpredictably Rational: Roy Sir | Home | Arthniti 18/02/2018

On the blog: A faculty profile of one of our most beloved professors, Krishna Kant Roy Sir.

"If I were to describe Roy sir in a few words, only one quote comes to mind, “When people expect me to go right, I’ll go left. I am unpredictable.” Being unpredictable is inherent in his nature. I highly doubt I would be questioned on this, whoever he’s taught would rather agree with me, as his students we have never known what he’s thinking or what he’s going to be doing next."
