Department of Sociology Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune is organizing Senapati Bapat Memorial Lecture on "Our Courage is Our Capital" on 18th March 2026.

Today the department of Sociology Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune organized a one day workshop on "Subject Centred Approach to the Study of Social Movements" in collaboration with RC 17 Collective Action, Mobilization and Social Movements of Indian Sociological Society. For this workshop 50 participants participated from various universities and colleges all over India in the online and offline mode.

The aim of this workshop was to bring scholars of social movements together from all over India who are using and want to use "Subject Centred Approach to the study Social Movements."

The workshop began with welcome address by Prof. Harish Navale (Head (I/C), Department of Sociology SPPU) highlighting the philosophical aspects of Subjectivity and gave an indisciplary touch to the workshop. Prof. Shruti Tambe (Workshop Coordinator and RC 17 Convenor) explained the idea behind the workshop and the relevance of this approach in the study of social movements since the subject centred approach is not popular in India. She also introduced the main speaker Prof. Geoffrey Players ( President, International Sociological Association).

Prof. Geoffrey Pleyers in his presentation discussed the subject centred approach to the social movements. During his lecture he emphasized that sociologists need to rigorously analyse collective mobilizations using conceptual and analytical tools. He also emphasized that social movements are processes of knowledge making and contribute to making future where people are the authors of their own life.
Following this presentation Prof. Shruti Tambe shared her remarks on the Subject Centred Approach from a Southern perspective and highlighted subjectivity, historicity, and the grid of structuration.

In the pre-lunch and post lunch session various researchers, Sociology teachers and scholars responded to the presentation made by Prof. Geoffrey Players in relation to their own research topics. In the end Mr. Prashant Apte ( Secretary, RC 17) proposed the vote of thanks and workshop ended on a positive note.

Our department is honoured to have with us Eminent Sociologist and Ex-President of Indian Sociological Society Prof. Anand Kumar speaking on Indian Democracy. Students of M.A. studying courses like Sociology of India, Political Sociology, Sociology of Social movements will learn a lot from this session! Welcome Dear Prof. Ananad Kumar!

सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विद्यापीठ समाजशास्त्र विभाग चिकित्सा सेतू अंतर्गत एक दिवसीय पुणे जिल्हास्तरीय लेखन कार्यशाळा (Academic Writing) अतिशय उत्साहात संपन्न झाली. महात्मा फुले, सत्यशोधक समाज आणि समकालीन प्रश्न ह्या विषयावर या कार्यशाळेत प्रा. शुभदा नगरकर, प्रा. श्रुती तांबे, प्रा. संजय सावळे, डॉ. चेतना देसाई, डॉ. विकास शेवाळे, डॉ. हर्ष जगझप डॉ. वैशाली दिवाकर यांनी विद्यार्थ्यांना मार्गदर्शन केल. तसेच डॉ. मेघा देशपांडे, प्रा. किरण सुरवसे, डॉ. कविता मुनेशवर, डॉ. गुलाब पठाण यांनी महात्मा ज्योतीराव फुले यांच्यावर कार्यावर भाष्य केले. सदर कार्यशाळेला अतिशय छान प्रतिसाद विद्यार्थ्यांकडून मिळाला. १५ महाविद्यालयातील प्राध्यापक व १५० च्या वर विद्यार्थी सदर कार्यशाळेसाठी उपस्थित होते. (काही वक्ते पूर्वनियोजित कामांमुळे व आरोग्याच्या समस्यांमुळे येऊ शकले नाहीत.)

I was privileged to witness my respected teacher and excellent institution builder, ex- President of Indian Sociological Society and Ex- Vice Chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth Prof. bhoite celebrating renowned sociologist and Lohiate Public intellectual and ex- President of Indian Sociological Society Prof. Anand Kumar's 75th Birthday in Pune on the 18th September 2024! The warmth and respect was reciprocal and there is so much to learn from these stalwarts!! Their conversation was a feast indeed!

समाजशास्त्र विभाग सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विद्यापीठ पुणे आणि युनिव्हर्सटी ऑफ साऊथ ईस्टर्न नॉर्वे या दोन्ही विद्यापीठांच्या संयुक्त विद्यमाने सुरू असलेल्या ( सोशल जस्टिस अँड कल्चर: सस्टेनेबल सोशल वेलफेअर इन निओ लिबरल टाइम्स (SOJUCU) प्रकल्पांतर्गत मागील वर्षी ४ पीएचडी (विष्णू वैरागड, अभिजित कांबळे, टर्बी लोयी आणि सोमनाथ निर्मळ) आणि एम.एम च्या तीन विद्यार्थिनी ( तिस्ता चंद्रा, प्रकृती मुखर्जी आणि शायरी रॉय चौधरी) यांना नॉर्वे येथे तीन महिन्यांसाठी अध्ययन करण्याची संधी मिळाली होती. तर यंदा समाजशास्त्र विभाग, सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विद्यापीठातील पाच पीएचडी ( मिलिंद चव्हाण, सबिहा इम्रान, विष्णू शिंदे, स्नेहा झुंजरुटे आणि प्रशांत आपटे) आणि एम. ए चे चार विद्यार्थी (रिया खरवलीकर, सौम्या सक्सेना, जिर्बोन तोकबिपी आणि ऋषिकेश शहाणे) दिनांक १० ऑगस्ट ते ३१ ऑक्टोबर २०२३ या काळात नॉर्वे येथे अध्ययनासाठी जाणार आहेत.

प्रा. श्रुती तांबे या नॉर्वे विद्यापीठासोबत सुरू असलेल्या प्रकल्पाच्या मुख्य समन्वयक आहेत.

Ms. Terbi Loyi and Mr. Vishnu Vairagad (Senior Research Fellow, Department of Sociology SPPU) presented a Research paper in the 20th International Sociological Association (ISA) World Congress conference 2023 titled "Resurgent Authoratarianism: Sociology of New Entanglements Religion, Politics and Economies" held in Melbourne, Australia.
