Work life in Auroville
-----
The real work in Auroville is the transformation of the consciousness
Outer work builds roads, gardens, systems, structures…
Inner work builds the human being who can live in the future we are trying to manifest.
Mother said:
> “It is the inner work that makes the outer effective.”
Without inner change, outer activity becomes:
ego-driven to
power-seeking
vital reactive
unconscious
🌿 1. Work must support inner growth, not swallow it
Work shouldn't be in such a way that:
they have no energy left
they have no time to reflect, meditate, or grow inwardly
their vital becomes exhausted
the body becomes tense and over-driven
Balanced, conscious work, not the modern “work culture” of overdoing.
“Work is for the growth of consciousness, not for exhaustion.”
(paraphrased from Mother’s teachings on the right attitude in work)
Working reasonable hours keeps your vital stable and your inner flame awake.

🌿 2. Auroville Must Avoid the Old World’s Work Culture
“Auroville is meant to be a new creation, not the repetition of the old ways of life.”
— The Mother, Auroville Archives
This means:
not the typical pressure-driven work culture
not overexertion
not productivity obsession
---
🌿 3. The true “hard work” in Integral Yoga is INNER work
“The hardest labour is the labour of inner change.”
— Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga
Outer work is needed, but:
👉 The real tapasya is psychological work
conquering reactions
cultivating peace
watching the ego
transforming habits
Living in a higher consciousness
This inner work needs time, quiet, and energy —
which gets destroyed if one is overworked outwardly.

4. Overwork Blocks Progress
“Overwork comes from an egoistic will. It is not favourable to progress.”
— The Mother, CWM 14 “Hard work is very good for the being if done in the right spirit.”
— Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga
5. The Right Rhythm of Work
“The work must be done with a quiet mind and a steady will, not with agitation.”
— The Mother, CWM 14
A quiet mind creates a balanced, not exhausting, work rhythm.
6. Collective Life Simplifies Outer Needs
“In a collective life lived sincerely, the material needs become very simple.”
— The Mother, CWM 13
