More than 500 students of Engineering, 240 hours of classroom sessions, 4 months of engagement, and all of this accomplished by a team of a handful of facilitators which I have been able to lead!
Biggest learning! Most of these students are first-time voters. Hence it is self-explanatory why dialogue around constitutional values is needed in this space.

Working with citizens across India is an enriching experience. It truly enhances my understanding of the Constitution as well. The Last few days in Saurashtra, and Netrang of Gujarat has helped me realize how tough it must have been for the Constituent Assembly Members to make one Constitution that accommodates ALL the diversity and complexity of the Indian society.

Working with Teens on building a Constitutional lens is an experience that I really look forward to. On weekend interacted with 70 teens from Pune District on constitutional values.

Own it, Understand it, Act Upon it

These two groups from Wardha were engrossed in the work. I must say, I could sense the tension this time while doing the workshop on the Constitution. It was pouring and with each rain, i could see that concerns went up as crops have got affected very badly. It's natural for people to feel that while the constitution talks about justice for everyone, the ground reality is very different. Hence in order to be actively involved in the decision and policy-making, we all the more need such types of workshops to prepare ourselves to find answers to complex questions.

Kudos to these young minds from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh who try really hard to make sure women in households live with dignity and fight and resist domestic violence. The cases of domestic violence are complex to deal with and can take an emotional toll.
During three days of Training at Ranchi, On behalf of We, The People Abhiyan we worked with them on how the constitutional framework could be integrated into the work they are doing on the ground.

नाशिक येथील कार्यशाळेला उत्तम प्रतिसाद.
सध्या महाराष्ट्रात झालेल्या राजकीय उलथापालथीमुळे राजकारणावरती तर आपण बोलतच आहोत. पण ही संधी साधून आपल्याला नागरिक म्हणून सक्षम कसे होता येईल, योग्य प्रश्न कसे विचारता येतील, संविधानाची चौकट मजबूत करण्यासाठी काय करता येईल यादृष्टीनेदेखील आपण प्रयत्न सुरु केले पाहिजेत.
शाळेत अजूनदेखील नागरिकशास्त्र हा विषय दुर्लक्षित आहे हे दिसून येते. उद्देशिका तर प्रत्येक मुलाला पाठ आहे पण त्याचा अर्थ मात्र रोजच्या जीवनाशी लावता येत नाही ही वस्तुस्थिती आहे. संविधानाची भाषा क्लिष्ट म्हणून आपण उद्देशिकेच्या पुढे शाळेत जात नाही ही देखील वस्तुस्थिती आहे.
प्रगत नागरिकशास्त्र शिक्षण कार्यक्रमामध्ये तिसरी ते दहावी या मुलांसोबत संविधानिक चौकटीला धरून आपण काम करतो. यामध्ये खेळ, कृती, गाणी तर आहेतच पण मोठ्या वर्गांसाठी संविधानातील मूळ text सोबत काम देखील आपण करतो. हे करणे महत्वाचे आहे कारण आज क्लिष्ट भाषा म्हणून जर आपण समजून घेतले नाही तर व्हाट्सअप फॉर्वर्डच्या पलीकडे आपली समज जाणार नाही. क्लिष्ट भाषा मदतीच्या द्वारे उत्तमपणे समजून घेता येते आणि आपली संविधानिक दृष्टी धारदार करायला मदतच करते हा आमचा अनुभव आहे.
नाशिकच्या आनंद निकेतन शाळेने याचे महत्व जाणले आणि हल्लीच प्रगत नागरिकशास्त्र शिक्षण कार्यक्रमाची दुसरी कार्यशाळा आपण नाशिकला घेतली. जवळपास ३० शिक्षक प्रतिनिधी आणि संविधान या विषयाला धरून काम करणाऱ्या लोकांनी यात सहभाग घेतला.
हा प्रतिसाद नक्कीच प्रोत्साहित करणारा आहे.

सध्या अग्निपथ योजना चर्चेत आहे. एकंदरीतच संसद कायदे बनविते, सरकार धोरणे ठरवते यावेळी नक्की काय प्रोसेस follow करते? कायदे बनविताना काय गोष्टी लक्षात ठेवल्या पाहिजेत? एक एक शब्दाने कायद्याचा अर्थ आणि आपल्या आयुष्यावर होणारे परिणाम कसे बदलू शकतात हे सर्व शिकण्यासाठी खालील वर्कशॉपमध्ये जरूर सहभागी व्हा.

लहान मुलांसोबत संविधानाला धरून काम करताना अनेक प्रश्न पडतात. मूल्य, समानता, न्याय हे सगळे कसे लहान मुलांना समजावून सांगायचे? त्यांना संविधान, नागरिकशास्त्र या विषयाची गोडी लागेल हे कसे करता येईल. हे आणि असे अनेक प्रश्न.
सेवाग्रामला, या तीन दिवसामध्ये आम्ही १६ जणांनी मिळून यावर उत्तरे शोधली, स्वतः खेळ, कृती करून पाहिल्या. विदर्भामध्ये प्रथमच झालेल्या प्रगत नागरिकशास्त्र शिक्षण कार्यक्रमाचे प्रशिक्षण काल संपले. काम आता मात्र सुरु झाले आहे. सर्व सहभागी व्यक्तींना हार्दिक शुभेच्छा.

How do we explain to kids what values mean? What is equality, and what is justice? At Nayi Talim, Sewagram, Wardha, 16 of us made an attempt to solve these difficulties. We ourselves tried out activities that we could do with children. The training is over but the work has just begun.

'संविधान' मालिकेत एक दृश्य आहे, जिथे एक संविधान सभा सदस्य श्री. जगजीवन राम आश्रमात जाऊन महात्मा गांधींना भेटतात. आणि महात्मा गांधी त्यांना म्हणतात
"देशातील सगळ्यात शेवटच्या व्यक्तीचा विचार करा आणि मग स्वतःला विचारा, की आपण जे संविधान बनवत आहोत त्याचा त्या व्यक्तीला फायदा होईल का?"
ज्या क्षणी मी सेवाग्रामला पोहोचले, हेच शब्द मला आठवले. आपल्याला अजून बराच पल्ला गाठायचा आहे.

Understand it, Own it, Act Upon it
There is one scene in the Samvidhan series, where a Constituent Assembly Member Shri. Jagjivan Ram goes and meets Mahatma Gandhi in the Ashram. And Mahatma Gandhi tells him the following.
"Think about the last person in the country and then ask yourself, whether the constitution that we are making will benefit him/her?"
The moment I reached Sewagram, I remembered these very words. We have a long way to go. It was my absolute pleasure to be at Sewagram Today and do the Advanced Civic Education Program for Teachers.
