Bits Pilani x Chhalaang Foundation

Today, the Chhalaang team distributed 45 dry ration kits with more than 1600 meals in New Delhi, through our collaboration!

We are glad to be able to do our bit during this pandemic and help out those in need. Chhalaang Foundation is still accepting donations and continuing its distribution drives. Please do consider helping the initiative through your help.

Let us all join hands and help those in need when they need it the most 😷

We are proud to announce our collaboration with the Delhi based non-profit organisation, Chhalaang Foundation.

Through our partnership, Chhalaang Foundation will distribute dry ration kits, each worth Rs 300, to the under-resourced victims of this pandemic.

To address this, Enactus BITS Pilani’s Project Suraksha is Empowering Rural Unemployed Women by training them to stitch masks at home and earn a living.

Enactus BITS Pilani fights COVID-19 👊😷
Unemployment and high societal costs of basic face masks is running down the poor of any resources they have left during the pandemic.

For this, we bring to you Project Suraksha where we empower unemployed rural women by training them in making inexpensive COVID-19 masks and supplying them to the needy and most vulnerable.

We have made and distributed 500 masks so far and with your support, we aim to reach thousands!

Enactus BITS Pilani is the proud recipient of the Best Collaboration Award in the recently conducted Enactus Cares competition for its project Suraksha.
The Competition was specifically aimed to provide relief during the pandemic.
We intend to provide medically certified masks handmade by women daily wage workers and helping them maintain a recurring source of income and support their families throughout this pandemic.

"In 1985, kids here were not as modernised and technologically equipped as today but they used to turn their heads and look at this simple cycle repair guy once in a while. About 20 years ago I was shifted near Ceeri gate, a place where hardly any student or faculty passed by even on holidays. Then on Oasis, an anonymous little boy got empathetic to my situation and helped me come to this spot near the library.
I was a different guy back then. Not talking to or getting involved with anyone much. Just keeping my head low, and continuing to do my work. Even then, kids were so generous and giving to people like me. A kid I remember promised to give me his water cooler. When I went to his room he had already sold it to someone who bid for it. When his eyes met mine, he got reminded of his defaulted promise. He came running behind me to my shop, apologised a lot and gave me a brand new umbrella and 1000 rupees. So was another young lady who gave all her basic stationery and her cycle to me while passing out.
Some 5 years ago came a student who noticed my struggle and connected me to NSS who pay for half my children’s educational expense.
Now it's very different from those days since it’s become expensive to live and I've come to living hand to mouth. Nobody lets go off even a penny for no use. Haggling is something I never engaged in. Whatever someone is willing to pay for a menial job of cycle repair, I accept it with humility.
Things were not always as low as they seem today. I had an up and running business when I started near Old Workshop with my buddy, the well known, Nagar Ji. I was even offered to work in factories by different students. But responsibilities of family tied me down to my origin. Otherwise, I'd have explored my undiscovered peripherals. Now life too plays its hand, I had Old workshop and IC near me in the beginning, now I've got New Workshop and the new Nescafe canteen. I'm not at all broken by what life has thrown at me. Ever since I'm just collecting those pebbles and making the best out of them." .

"People say Science believers don't have faith, but I saw god in the face of students. Vasu Sharma, a student in Vyas Bhawan, randomly called one fine day about some SWD work. I was chowki of Vyas Bhawan then. He happened to ask about my whereabouts and I was in Jaipur those days for my wife's treatment. She had been detected with blood cancer. A few days later he showed his concern again regarding my wife's condition. Then I told him about the bone marrow transplant and the huge sum required for it. I had no intention of asking for money or conveying my grief though he seemed welcoming towards me to share it. A couple of days later he offered to help to which I couldn't comprehend how a student with no job could help me with raising such an amount. He said he'd talked to his friends and wanted to ask if helping me would be acceptable. I was dumbfounded on an indecipherable level. I felt obliged to first ask Bits authorities for help if it was possible but they denied under technicalities. I had almost lost hope when my dear friend, R S Rathore, Superintendent of Malviya Bhawan, encouraged me to go forward with the scheme students had in mind. When they started, I could not believe the impact they created which was such that they raised more money than required and I had to get it stopped. My wife and my whole family was blessed by the kindness of students here. My wife then went through several surgeries which came through successfully. She was fit and fine just when some 16 days after discharge, she succumbed to a heart attack. Before going she made me promise I would always serve the students of BITS like my own. It was those students, whose names and faces I shall never forget, the money raised by them that gave my wife a chance to fight. Humanity is no less than God's magic.
Since then, every month from my salary, I make sure to donate 15-20% of the amount to Birla Sarvajanik Hospital. I believe when it comes to help and support of any kind, those who deserve it should never be denied."

"Having a basic education till 5th standard, I opened this stall in 1975 near Nutan. As Bitsians are major revenue generators here, I shifted near Bits gate in 2001.It was only a year after I started selling alcohol that I stopped, since it brought an image unsought for. People feel uncomfortable having their peaceful cup of tea at a place giving “theka” vibes.Once a kid managed to owe me about 25k by the end of his graduation. He left for his placement job with nothing but a promise to return the sum from his first salary. So he did, making me realise trust is a two way road. It’s as simple as it sounds, if you don’t cheat the students, they don’t cheat with you.To my good fortune, I'd been offered business propositions from Bitsians as I am good at tailoring, stitching and various other menial jobs. One of them even pleaded a lot to work in her start-up but I was stupid back then. I did not realise how good those opportunities were for my growth. Not just that, some students offer to bear my children's expenses out of kindness. However, 500 rupees per day from this stall and harvest from acres of family farms brings us at par with our expenses. I must say their care feels good.Students in college are led by their own minds and not preachy adults around them. My not selling ci******es won’t stop students from consuming them.All that is fine though, I believe college life is the process of change from being led by parents to learning your own pathway. It is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest. Obviously, with a glass of Kaalu’s Shikanji!"

"I never imagined it would be such a rollercoaster ride along all these years in BITS Pilani. Starting off by selling tea at cnot from the age of 8, I've been here all my life. One fine day, The Director got an idea to start a redi at Sky lawns. So we gave this experiment a shot with simply tea, patties and a helping hand from the kids. With the changing times, the taste preferences of students change - I've updated the menu with more than 15 different noodles and many more exclusive items now available only at Sky Lab. Students from BITS are very humble. Even CEOs and big officers in the outer world never forget this Pappu. These grown-ups come and chit-chat with me like old pals. My children have been blessed with successful lives in London and Paris. Though the 7 seas in between, they have never let their old man feel the distance. My youngest son felt bored after 6pm and wanted to do something new which was not yet in Pilani and hence brought to you the 'Apna Adda'. Now I'm 61 and there's something I'd like you millenials to know, Give respect, take respect. Live an let live. These might sound old ideologies but they still define the meaning of humanity in true sense. What else does one ask for?" .

"I came to this renowned campus in 1965 when I was merely 12. I Bought the 'Hind Rickshaw' for 70 rupees in Meerut and set on a journey to experience the beautiful world of BITS Pilani. On good days I earn 200-300 rupees per day. Otherwise, it is just 100-175 rupees. Right now I have a loan of 4000 rupees on me with a 2% interest rate. The baniya is good-natured and knows I will repay when fruits are sold.
Go to Delhi, Bombay or Jaipur, our BITS Pilani is at number one, the luckiest number. I have been to Khalsa, Kirorimal, Hindu and Zakir Collge in Delhi but there are no students like Bitsians. Students organize impeccable Oasis whose sound can be heard till "cannot". Some female students tried to teach me how to read and write, however, as they graduated, the classes got discontinued and I forgot everything.
I still remember all the students by name. Unknowingly, they have taken a special place in my heart. When they come back for alumni meets to reunite, I make sure I walk them around the whole campus reliving the good old days. To my surprise, they do think about a small fruit seller like me and express it in ways that are immeasurable on the happiness scale. It has made me realize that a successful life isn't measured by money or riches, but by the people who remember you for the pleasant difference you make in their life."
