Inspired Karters Gravity is a student-run technical team of BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus. We participate in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, an international event conducted by NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. We build a high-performance human-powered Rover which traverses the surface of the Moon and Mars at NASA’s facility. We need your help to raise funds to support our project, win the NASA HERC 2022 and make BITS Pilani and India proud on an international platform.

History: Formerly Inspired Karters BAJA, we used to participate in national events like BAJA SAE and Enduro Student. In 2020, we shifted sights to the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC), an international engineering challenge where participating teams build a durable and mobile human-powered Rover.

Achievements: We first participated in the HERC last season (April 2021). Even with limited funds and amid the global pandemic, we were among the four college teams selected by NASA to represent India. We proudly announced our arrival to the HERC by successfully building the rover, by winning 1st position in Mission Performance Rubric Category and 10th Position overall among 43 participating teams.

Present Work: In October 2021, NASA announced the final list of teams selected to participate in the HERC 2022 on their official website (please click here to view). We are proud to be one of the 4 college teams to represent India in this prestigious event to be held in the Marshall Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Our plans for the upcoming challenge in April 2022 are to win the championship event and make BITS Pilani and India proud on an international platform.

Need for Funds: As a fully student-funded college team and in light of the current global situation, we face hard times ahead of us. To fuel our dreams of winning the competition, we need your help to collect the necessary funds. Funds would help us in procuring the necessary parts of the rover, manufacturing the custom-made components, assembling and shipping the rover to the USA.

We are Team Inspired Karters Gravity, a student-run technical team from the BITS Pilani. We participate in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, an international event conducted by NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. We build a high-performance human-powered Rover which traverses the surface of the Moon and Mars at NASA’s facility.

Our goal is to be the first Indian team to win this competition and make India and our college proud on this prestigious platform.

Being an independent student body we have always faced problems with the funds. To overcome this obstacle, we Had started a fundraiser campaign so that some kind people could help and live our dream together with us.

Last year, in our maiden attempt, we secured 1st Position in Mission Performance Rubrics Category and 10th Overall position. With the lightest and most agile rover design, we are one of the only 4 teams from India to be selected for the main event in 2022.

Chandrayaan-1, India's first mission to the Moon, was launched on October 22, 2008. The objective of the mission was to survey the lunar surface to produce a complete map of the chemical composition at the surface and three-dimensional topography. The polar regions were of special interest as they had a fair probability of containing traces of water.
The spacecraft was about the size of a refrigerator, with a dry weight (weight without fuel) of about 525 kilograms (1,160 lbs.), and was powered by a solar array that charged lithium-ion batteries on board.
It orbited around the Moon at a height of 100 km from its surface. Until May 2009 when the orbit was raised to 200km after successfully completing the mission's objectives.
During the course of this mission, they found traces of water making India the first country in the world to do so, and also produced a global image of the moon’s surface among other achievements.
The mission came to an end when contact was lost with the spacecraft on August 29, 2009. Chandrayaan-1 remains to be one of the most successful missions of ISRO to date.

Millions of people crowded around their televisions on July 20, 1969, to watch two US astronauts accomplish something no one had ever done before.

Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon, with cumbersome spacesuits and oxygen backpacks. After the two stepped onto the lunar surface, Armstrong proclaimed these famous words: “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Apollo 11, carried out by NASA, lasted for 8 days. The primary objective of Apollo 11 was to complete a national goal set by US President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961: to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. They also brought back 47 pounds of lunar material for further examination.

The Apollo program, by far the most expensive spaceflight endeavor in history, kicked off that year, and by the time it ended in 1972, nine missions and 24 astronauts had orbited or landed on the moon.

Fun fact: Moon soil is extremely clingy and hard to brush off, so when Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the lunar module and repressurized it, lunar dirt that had clung to the men’s suits entered the cabin and began to emit an odor. The astronauts reported that it had a burned smell like wet fireplace ashes, or like the air after a fireworks show.

We are proud to announce that Inspired Karters Gravity is one of India's sole qualifying teams for the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge 2022, held at Marshall Space Flight Centre, Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA's HERC features an engineering design challenge to engage students to explore human space. It challenges students to create a human-powered vehicle to traverse simulated surfaces and complete the tasks along the way.

We are happy to be a part of such a competitive and innovative challenge and among those few teams who got selected for HERC.

We are glad to unveil our trophies in the 5th annual formula student electric vehicle concept challenge.
- 1st in FMEA report
- 1st in Team Management Strategy
- 3rd in Procurement Report

And 3rd OVERALL WINNER
The journey to this juncture has been very insightful and we look forward to fully develop ourselves and win the upcoming Formula Bharat 2021 competition.

We are glad to share that the Team Inspired Karters Electric has secured overall 3rd Position in the FSEV Concept Challenge 2021.

Individual awards:
- 1st in FMEA
- 1st in Team Management Strategy
- 3rd in Procurement Strategy

We would graciously like to thank all our team members for impressive hardwork which blessed us with such a wonderful result. We would also like to thank and congratulate the organizers for conducting the competition in such a wonderful way.
We are also grateful to our institute BITS Pilani for the constant support we have received from the faculty members and fellow students!

A colleague from London Business School, Mr. Madhukar Soni has reached out to me to get in touch with Karters who are pursuing startups in Solar and EV. They believe karters are the right set of people with skills, experience and enthusiasm for taking on the EV Solar hyperdrive.
