I don't do much yoga but I do know how to perform surya namaskar. It is a very good stretching exercise and for me surya namaskar instantly comes to mind when someone mentions yoga.
Although I agree that making surya namaskar compulsory in schools is not required but performing surya namskar on Yoga day observations is an absolute must. Anyone who would found it blasphemy should simply not participate in it as Yoga day celebrations are not forced but voluntary.
Surya namaskar name sounds like it is meant as a prayer to sun god and that is why I believe people are objecting to it. I do not believe in existence of god and for me it is more like kind of a physical exercise.
It is a shame that it has been dropped based on religious grounds from the Yoga day drill.
