Going green is the stylish way to live
Enjoying and endorsing eco-friendly living is the new buzz word of the hour and World Environment Day is a good time to celebrate the arrival of this hip new lifestyle. Gone are the days when being earth-friendly meant a token nod to green living like toting a jute handbag, sending e-cards to prevent the use of paper, or participating in a few green planet drives. Today, having an eco-conscious mindset is considered both stylish and smart.
Green celebrities are hailed as the real heroes, whether it is Leonardo DiCaprio who uses a fresh filtered air system, low emission paints and rotating solar panels in his house, Natalie Portman who works towards saving the silverback gorillas, Gwyneth Paltrow who lives by green values, or Cameron Diaz who endorses carbon neutral travel.
More and more people in India are also working towards adopting farm-to-plate dining options, using earth-friendly lighting, utilizing water minimally and embracing responsible luxury.
Green wardrobe
Seeking out designers and manufacturers of eco-friendly clothes is popular globally. Says Deepika Govind, fashion expert, "Being eco-conscious while choosing your clothes is an important statement that you make. It is not someone else's job anymore. I aim at this, right from the use of eco-friendly fibres, organic dyes and the usage of minimal water. She has also introduced a range of organic denim and soyabean knits using the soya bean fibre.
Responsible luxury
Sensitivity to the environment is also important when it comes to eating out, choosing a vacation spot or holding a party or a banquet. Says Anil Chadha, area manager of a luxury hotel, "Influencing, co-partnering and endorsing a delicate balance between luxury and the environment will go a long way and valuing this is now seen as a necessity and as a culture change. From temperature control in banquet spaces, use of natural lighting, wood-free pencils, chlorine-free paper, farm-to-plate dining options, sustainable building materials, to zero kilometre sprout bars, there is so much that can be done."
Change the way you shop
Many fashionistas today are seen sporting shopping bags and refusing to touch the plastic carry bags that are offered at a small price. Devika Krishnan, who runs a project to create bags made out of discarded juice cartons and cement sacks, says, "I was asked to set up the livelihood initiative as a part of a larger social development project. The bags we make have a traditional basket weave modified to suit the cartons. We have products ranging from small slings and mobile pouches to party clutches, laptop totes and shopping baskets." According to Devika, it isn't enough to be "eco-conscious" by being waste "savvy", but the need of the hour is to be less wasteful. "If we consume less, we waste less," she says.
And if you need paper...
Says Jenny Pinto, who crafts eco-friendly paper at her studio, "As raw material, I use only natural fibres that are wastes from agriculture and the rural cottage industry. Banana, mulberry, kora grass, jute and sisal are wonderful fibres that make beautiful, strong paper. As for whether we should all lead eco-conscious lives, I don't think it is a question we should be asking anymore."

Manish Arora presents retrospective couture
It was Day 3 of the Delhi Couture Week at Taj Palace Hotel and for a change, it felt like there was nothing Indian on the ramp. We witnessed a retrospective display of his favourite garments shown at the Paris Fashion Week over the last five years, where each piece had its special theme in the order of its seasons - India Pop, Warriors, Circus, Baroque, Circus, Magic, and so on. While most of the dresses were being showed in India for the very first time, several others had been worn by leading ladies of today's popular culture such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj to name a few.
Decor - A caged ramp with neon lights
A jail-like podium with defined entry and exit points and adorned with multi-coloured serial lights was the highpoint of the decor. While the attempt at a fancy and innovative setting was pleasing, an obstructed view was certainly not appreciated. The magic of neon lighting, ear deafening music and screeching whistles from the audience helped pace the tempo of the show. Models strolled in wearing 16-inches high wedges, boots and stilettos, careful not to trip or bump into any of the the lofty enclosures.
Couture, straight from Paris!
No bridal wear, no gem-studded jewellery and absolutely nothing Indian. Manish Arora brought to India a couture collection of absolute international standard. "Couture in Paris has a lot to do with technicalities unlike in India where it is generally associated with festivity and celebration," said Manish.
Futuristic neo-prints, graffiti designs, plain tunics with velvet appliques resembling lips, jacket worn over tunic with armour like shoulders, off shoulder black dress with floral appliques all over, and black satin knee-length dress with outrageous gold-embellished pockets were some of the garments that stood out. Manish's inspiration comes a lot from artists he meets and naturally, his designs are reflection of their art. However, something as simple as a butterfly can play muse too. "Inspiration comes easily but executing that idea is difficult. The butterfly dress (a beautiful empire cut dress with overcrowded butterfly appliques) took almost 6 months to ready," said he. Making no qualms about using real fur in some of his pieces ( a magenta fur mini skirt resembling the rear of an ostrich and fox fur stoles designed deliberately to look like an animal's tail), he confirms, "The ones I've used are all legal."
