मानव शरीर में दांतों की संरचना काफी दिलचस्प होती है। हम "हेटरोडॉन्ट" (Heterodont) कहलाते हैं, जिसका मतलब है कि हमारे मुंह में अलग-अलग आकार और काम वाले दांत होते हैं।
वयस्क इंसान के मुंह में कुल 32 दांत होते हैं, जिन्हें मुख्य रूप से चार श्रेणियों में बांटा गया है:
1. कृंतक (Incisors): "काटने वाले दांत"
ये आपके मुंह के बिल्कुल सामने वाले 8 दांत होते हैं (4 ऊपर, 4 नीचे)। इनका आकार छेनी जैसा होता है।
काम: भोजन को छोटे टुकड़ों में काटना या कुतरना।
खास बात: जब आप सेब या पिज्जा काटते हैं, तो इन्हीं दांतों का इस्तेमाल होता है।
2. रदनक (Canines): "फाड़ने वाले दांत"
ये कृंतक दांतों के बगल में नुकीले दांत होते हैं। इनकी संख्या 4 होती है (2 ऊपर, 2 नीचे)।
काम: भोजन को पकड़ना और उसे फाड़ना।
तुलना: मांसाहारी जानवरों में ये दांत बहुत बड़े और विकसित होते हैं।
3. अग्र-चर्वणक (Premolars): "कुचलने वाले दांत"
ये रदनक के पीछे स्थित होते हैं। एक वयस्क में इनकी संख्या 8 होती है। इनकी ऊपरी सतह चपटी होती है।
काम: भोजन को कुचलना और पीसना।
नोट: दूध के दांतों में ये नहीं होते; ये केवल स्थायी दांतों के रूप में आते हैं।
4. चर्वणक (Molars): "पीसने वाली मशीन"
ये मुंह के सबसे पिछले हिस्से में होते हैं और सबसे बड़े दांत होते हैं। कुल 12 होते हैं (जिनमें 4 अक्ल दाढ़ यानी Wisdom Teeth शामिल हैं)।
काम: भोजन को पूरी तरह से महीन पीसना ताकि वह आसानी से निगला जा सके।
अक्ल दाढ़: ये आमतौर पर 17 से 25 साल की उम्र के बीच निकलते हैं।
