We the IEEE student branch, IIT Patna are celebrating IEEE day on 21st October. Prof. Mykel Kochenderfer, Stanford University, has agreed to spare time with us and deliver a talk on the topic/abstract shared below.
Researchers and students from across domains and departments are encouraged to attend the talk and to preferably take away some practical insights on real-world applications.
The topic for the talk is: Automated Decision Making for Safety-Critical Applications
Schedules:
Time: 6 PM
Date: October 21, 2021
All interested, kindly register in the link provided below.

Bio: Mykel Kochenderfer is an Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory (SISL), conducting research on advanced algorithms and analytical methods for the design of robust decision-making systems. He is also a co-director of the Stanford Center for AI Safety. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from Stanford University. He is an author of the textbooks "Decision Making under Uncertainty: Theory and Application", "Algorithms for Optimization", and "Algorithms for Decision Making", all from MIT Press.
Abstract: Building robust decision-making systems is challenging, especially for safety critical systems such as unmanned aircraft and driverless cars. Decisions must be made based on imperfect information about the environment and with uncertainty about how the environment will evolve. In addition, these systems must carefully balance safety with other considerations, such as operational efficiency. Typically, the space of edge cases is vast, placing a large burden on human designers to anticipate problem scenarios and develop ways to resolve them. This talk discusses major challenges associated with ensuring computational tractability and establishing trust that our systems will behave correctly when deployed in the real world. We will outline some methodologies for addressing these challenges.

Hello Everyone!!
We the IEEE community at IIT Patna are growing, and always want to converge with you around the contemporary technological excellence for a better tomorrow.
Every year, IEEE Day used to be a memorable event to celebrate our achievements. Unfortunately, we could not have a physical event this year on the IEEE Day originally planned on 6th October. However, as the IEEE Day's theme is "Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow". While the world benefits from what's new, IEEE focuses on what's next.
Following the theme, we are excited to announce a talk by a notable researcher Mr. Jaydeep Sen from IBM Research AI, India Lab. He works as a Research Scientist in AI for an Interaction group focusing on Enterprise NLP research problems cutting across NLP, Reasoning, and Database. It would be really exciting to interact with Mr. Sen and to know how the industry is shaping the research.
The details of the talk are as follows:
Date: 22nd October
Time: 2.45 to 4.00 PM

Abstract: Recent advances in natural language understanding and processing resulted in a renewed interest in Natural Language Interface to Database (NLIDB) systems, which provide an easy mechanism for non-technical users to access and query the data, without needing to know the schema or query language such as SQL. While early NLIDB systems only allowed simple selection queries over a single table, some of the recent work attempts to support complex BI queries, with many joins and aggregation, and even nested queries. The research space of NLIDB systems still has a lot of open challenges in terms of handling ambiguity in language understanding, inducing commonsense reasoning, handling complex target queries, to name a few. In this talk, we will briefly review the technical roadmap of how NLIDB systems have evolved over time and specifically focus on two milestones NLIDB systems from IBM which have pushed the state-of-the-art for NLIDB systems' capability.
Bio: Mr. Jaydeep Sen has done Masters of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kanpur (2013) and a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science and Technology from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2011). He has multiple papers at Top Conferences like IJCAI, VLDB, SIGMOD, COLING, etc. and holds 10+ patents with USPTO (Filed/In Process). His current research interests include applications for Natural Language Understanding, Semantic Reasoning. He is actively contributing to the next line of AI inventions coming up for Watson and IBM Cloud offerings.
Hope to see you on the 22nd of October. Stay safe and Have fun!
