This university is the second university (after Hebrew University,Jerusalem) to be named after a language - Punjabi in this case. The Primary Mission of this university is for the promotion of Punjab , Punjabi and Punjabiyat - Meaning o tpromote the state of Punjab , its language (Punjabi ) and its culture ( Punjabiyat). This unversity is the only university in the Punjab's malwa region( region so

uth of Sutlej upto Jhajhar river). Since its inception the university has diversified itself into 50+ departments teaching languages, dances, social science, astronomy, science, management, sports, gurmat sangeet, theatre, law and engineering.
