Quick Nursing Fact: Breathing vs. Respiration
Many students use these terms interchangeably — but they are NOT the same 👇
🔹 Breathing (Ventilation)
Breathing is the mechanical movement of air in and out of the lungs.
It involves inhalation and exhalation.
➡ It is a physical process.
🔹 Respiration
Respiration is the exchange and utilization of oxygen at the cellular level.
It includes: • External respiration (lungs ↔ blood)
• Internal respiration (blood ↔ tissues)
• Cellular respiration (oxygen used to produce energy/ATP)
✨ Exam Tip (NCLEX & NORCET):
A patient can be breathing but still not oxygenating properly (e.g., severe anemia, CO poisoning).
👉 Always assess oxygenation, not just respiratory rate.
