विज्ञान दिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा

शिक्षणाचे माध्यम मराठी असावे की इंग्रजी ?

भारतात इंग्रजी माध्यम हे प्रतिष्ठेचे लक्षण म्हणून पाहिले जाते,
अंगभूत गुणांमुळे नाही. हा सामजिक प्रश्न झालेला आहे. वरचा वर्ग
इंग्रजी माध्यमाच्या शाळेत जातो मग मध्यम वर्गाला वाटते मराठी
माध्यमात 'खालच्या वर्गाचे लोक' जातात. आपले मूल त्या
वातावरणात नको. खरे तर लोकांनी इंग्रजीचा बागुलबुवा करून
ठेवलाय. लोक काय म्हणतील ही भिती, भाषिक न्यूनगंड, इंग्रजीची
सामाजिक दर्जाशी घातलेली सांगड यामुळे लोक इंग्रजी
माध्यामकडे वळतात.
कित्येक शिक्षणतज्ञांचे मत आहे की शिक्षणाचे माध्यम मातृभाषा
असावे. इंग्रजी माध्यमातून शिकताना, लहानपणी अभ्यास कमी
आणि सोपा असतो तोवर जमते सगळे. पाठांतर करून बरेच जण
निभावून नेतात पण ९, १० वी नंतर अवघड जाऊ लागते. विषयांचा
आवाका वाढतो तसे पाठांतर अवघड बनते. विषयांचे आकलन न
झाल्यामुळे बऱ्याच अडचणी येतात. मराठी माध्यमातून शिकले तर
लहाणपणीपासुन सगळे विषय मातृभाषेत असल्याने समजत
जातात. आणि विषय समजुन घ्यायची सवय लागते. पुढे माध्यम बदलले तरी ही सवय कायम रहाते. जीवनविषयक आणि संस्कृती
विषयक बाबी मातृभाषेतूनच शिकल्या पाहिजेत.
इंग्रजी काळाची गरज आहे हेही खरेच. पण त्यासाठी इंग्रजी
माध्यमातून शिक्षण हाच एक पर्याय आहे असे नव्हे. आज कित्येक
लोक मराठी माध्यमाच्या शाळांत शिकून वेगवेगळ्या क्षेत्रांत यशस्वी
ठरलेले आहेत. यशस्वी होणारे लोक त्यांच्या अंगच्या इतर गुणांमुळे
यशस्वी होतात तर अयशस्वी लोकांपैकी काही लोक खापर
फोडायला भाषेची सबब पुढे करतात.
मराठी माध्यमाच्या शाळांत इंग्रजी संवाद कौशल्य शिकवले तर
इंग्रजी सहज बोलता येईल. पहिलीपासून इंग्रजी ही एक चांगली
योजना आहे. ती परिणामकारकरीत्या राबवली पाहिजे. इंग्रजीच्या
तासाला शिक्षक आणि विद्यार्थी संवाद इंग्रजीतून व्हायला हवा.
इंग्रजी संवाद कौशल्यासाठी काही सामजिक संस्था काम करत
आहेत, त्यांची मदत घेता येईल.
वरील सर्व गोष्टींचा पालकांनी आणि मराठी शाळाचालकांनी विचार
केला पाहिजे.
