Short /a/ or Long /ā/? Let’s make it easy!

Did you know the letter A can make two sounds?

🍎 Short /a/ — cat, bat, apple, ant
🎂 Long /ā/ — cake, rain, play, snail

👉 Short A usually appears in a closed syllable, like cat and map.
👉 Long A says its letter name, as in cake. It can be spelled in different ways: a-e, ai, ay, ea, ei, ey.

🎯 Remember:
Short A = /a/ → cat 🐱
Long A = /ā/ → cake 🎂
