Short /a/ or Long /Δ/? Letβs make it easy!
Did you know the letter A can make two sounds?
π Short /a/ β cat, bat, apple, ant
π Long /Δ/ β cake, rain, play, snail
π Short A usually appears in a closed syllable, like cat and map.
π Long A says its letter name, as in cake. It can be spelled in different ways: a-e, ai, ay, ea, ei, ey.

Long A = /Δ/ β cake π
