Chitkara International School, Panchkula, conducted an engaging session of the CIS Inkers Club for its avid students of Grades 7 to 10, centred on the intriguing theme “The Algorithm of a Plot Twist”. The session introduced students to the craft of creating compelling narratives that keep readers guessing until the very last line. Students explored how a plot twist goes beyond a mere surprise, as a truly effective twist changes the way readers understand everything that came before. They also examined the five essential ingredients of a well-crafted twist—foreshadowing, misdirection, suspense, pacing, and revelation—and understood how these elements work together to make a narrative both unexpected and believable. Through an engaging “Literary Detective” exercise, students reverse-engineered the story of a missing key, made predictions, and identified the hidden clues that had been subtly woven into the narrative. They analysed how elements such as the brass key, a suspicious character, a metallic sound, a red thread, a grandmother’s shawl, and a hidden letter contributed to the mystery and ultimately led to the revelation. The session further introduced students to the “Blueprint of a Twist”—from hook and mystery to clues, misdirection, suspense, false assumption, revelation, and twist—helping them understand that a powerful plot twist is carefully engineered rather than accidental.

The session was a great experience for the students, fostering their creative writing, critical thinking, narrative-building, and storytelling skills while encouraging them to create stories that surprise readers yet make perfect sense in hindsight.
