It's the time of the year when schools are buzzing with patriotic fervor, chapters from annals of history are recreated in auditoriums & playgrounds are turned into rhythmic march past parade practice fields. But what about the ordinary citizens, is the spirit of freedom still alluring? Can you recollect instantly how you celebrated last Independence Day? Some of you might have attended/watched the ceremonial parade at Red fort, some might have actively participated in the Ministry of Culture’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, some might have watched patriotic war movies while others simply might have cherished freedom from work & preferred to spend quality time with loved ones.
I can vividly recollect while appearing in UPSC Civil Services Mains Ethics Exam 2014, we were asked to answer the following question in around 150 words- “In the context of defence services, ‘patriotism’ demands readiness to even lay down one’s life in protecting the nation. According to you, what does patriotism imply in everyday civil life? Explain with illustrations and justify your answer”. Well citizens can render national service during crisis (Natural or man-made disaster), bring laurels to country by excelling in their respective fields (Sports medals, Academic pursuits), organizing cleanliness or environmental movements (Fulfilling civic responsibilities), actively supporting social causes (Nation building), following fundamental duties in letter & spirit etc.
