In the year 1912 a school by the name “ Chembrkulam School “ was started at Chembrakulam, Kottayi, Malabar District, Madras State, close to Chembai village, home to the famous exponent of Carnatic music Shri Vaidyanatha Bhaghavathar. This being an agrarian area with poor working class labourers were not prepared to send their children to school for education. Based on this challenge and to provi
de good education to the children, Shri.T.G.Govinda Iyer, from Mathur Agraharam, a nearby village, left his career in Corporate, to enter into the field of education. Thus in the year 1938, he took over this school and joined as a teacher and worked to promote and admit more students in the school. This resulted in improvement in number of divisions in each class and steady increase in students’ numbers too. Soon he was also able to upgrade the institution to a level of primary school. In a decade he was able to establish this institution as a status symbol for education in the surrounding areas. In the year 1945 he got the permission from the Government of India to upgrade the school into an “Upper Primary School”. From then on, it has been known as “Chembrakulam Aided Upper Primary School”. Since Shri T.G.Govinda Iyer was not a trained teacher by profession, he got admission in a teacher’s training school to secure a degree. Later he re-joined his school as a Teacher and Manager and relentlessly worked for upgrading the teaching facilities for students. By 60’s the school had increased number of divisions in each class and the student population swelled. Adjacent land was acquired and new buildings were built next to the school to add classes. His passion for teaching continued till 1969 when he retired as teacher/Head Master, but continued as Manager of the school. He passed away in the year 1991 at the age of 85. After his death Smt.Mangalam Ammal, his wife took over as Manager and continued to work for a decade for the betterment of the school. After her death, the management fell into the hands of their five sons, T.G.Gopalakrishnan, T.G.Subramaniam, T.G.Sankaran,T.G.Venkitraman (who has worked as a teacher for two years in this school), and T.G.Lakshmanan who are running the school from the Managing Committee Office located at 117, Smrithi, Parali-678 612, Palghat Dist, Kerala. They are being ably supported by Manager Smt. T.K.Saraswathy, retired teacher and former principal of Parali High School. As the school heads into its Centenary Year, the school has almost 800 students and has 30 teachers working. They are headed by the Head Mistress Smt. Vijayalakshmi, who has vast experience in teaching and administration. These teachers impart the best possible knowledge in subjects such as Malayalam, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, and Arabic. These team of enthusiastic teachers impart the best training in computer technology, spots, public speaking, reading culture, etc. The School has 22 divisions in 1-7 standards. English is the teaching medium in one class each in 1st std to 7th std. Apart from the Malayalam medium teaching, the other languages learned by the students are English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic and Urdu. The students are members of literary club, Science club, sports club, public speaking club, social service club etc. Many students have brought accolades to the institution by winning prizes in the inter-district school sports, and have also won scholarships for excellence in studies.
