The Bhaktivedanta Vidyapitha, based at the Govardhan Ecovillage, is a school dedicated to the systematic study of Srila Prabhupada’s books for resident students. We offer a two-year full-time study program of the Srimad Bhagavatam and Sri Caitanya Caritamrita which provides students a firm foundation in their practice of bhakti-yoga. Vision

Inspiring and inculcating Vaishnava qualities and a mood

of selfless service in the followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, by creating a strong sastric foundation for their spiritual lives

Mission

Assisting the devotees in understanding the glorious contribution of Srila Prabhupada’s books, by systematically studying them and contemplating practical ways for application of their teachings through an effective educational framework as envisaged by the Gaudiya Vaishnava parampara. Transformation

Our philosophy and practice of it is governed by an important rule – we cannot invent God, a religion and the practices that support it. It must come from the actual source Itself. Thus, we follow a triad to qualify what we speak and practice – sādhu-śāstra-guru: one has to test all spiritual matters according to the instructions of saintly persons (sādhus), scriptures (śāstra) and the spiritual master (guru) respectively. This ancient Vedic measure ensures that instructions and practice should not differ at any point from the above mentioned three and should always reconcile. Thus, we are sure that we are following a genuine path. Truth, Tradition and Transformation are symbolic equivalents for sastra, guru and sadhu respectively. According to the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the definition of truth, Absolute Truth, is Janmādy asya yataḥ: [SB 1.1.1] “The Absolute Truth is that from which everything emanates, the original source of all.” That is Absolute Truth. The Truth is “God is great, and we are subservient. So our duty is to abide by the instruction of God.” Instruction of God is passed on as Veda which means ‘Knowledge’ and being the words of the Absolute Truth, this message is absolute truth. All the knowledge required for us to live a meaningful and purposeful living is mentioned in the Veda. Vedic texts contain knowledge, not only about spirituality but any area that modern scientists and philosophers can think of or rather can’t even think of – like Cosmology, Medicine, Arts, Theatre, Sociology, Politics, Governance and many more. What we will not even learn from years of research can be easily found and understand by studying Vedic texts. Thus, Bhaktivedanta Vidyapitha engages the students in systematically studying and assimilating this truth of the scriptures with an aim of further propagating it. Tradition

evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ

This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. In the last 5000 years the popular scholars, politicians, philosophers, and svāmīs, have skewed the knowledge of Krishna who is the Absolute Truth. Anyone who tries to understand Vedic texts from such misguided views will commit a great blunder and will distract from a proper spiritual path. In order to ensure proper guidance God has personally passed on this information through his four empowered representatives Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Vishnuswami, and Nimbarkacharya which are today know as Four Sampradayas vis-a-vis Sri, Brahma, Rudra, and Kumara respectively. Perfect knowledge descends in paramparā (lineage), or deductive knowledge coming down from the authority to the submissive aural receiver who is bona fide by service and surrender. The guru, or the bona-fide spiritual master, is the representative of lineage, who is competent to teach the disciple in the right path with reference to the context of all authentic Vedic literature. Lineage and Spiritual master together represents Tradition. At Bhaktivedanta Vidyapitha, we study the scriptures translated and commented by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who is a representative in one such bona-fide lineage, Brahma-Madhva-Gauḍīya-Vaishnava-Sampradāya. And the study is conducted under the guidance of his disciples and their followers. Transformation

sad-bhāve sādhu-bhāve ca

The sense of the nature of the devotee is the sense of nature of Supreme

One who acts in divine consciousness is called a sādhu. Sādhu or a mahātmā, is defined as: mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ, bhajanty ananya manaso [Bg. 9.13] – one who has taken shelter of Kṛṣṇa cent percent, and his only business is to worship and glorify Kṛṣṇa. Sādhu means sage, or saint. He can be determined by his qualities

titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām
ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ sādhavaḥ sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ
[SB 3.25.21]

The symptoms of a sādhu are that he is tolerant, merciful and friendly to all living entities. He has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime. Today, millions of people who have come in contact with ISKCON movement and Srila Prabhupada’s books have developed these qualities which is a major transformation in their lives and a significant contribution for the society. At Bhaktivedanta Vidyapitha, students experience such transformation by studying scriptures, rendering services in their perspective and by associating with people who are living such exemplary lives.

SRIMATI RADHARANI'S MOTTO

Once the gopis were discussing amongst themselves about Srimati Radhika, “Oh, this one gopi has surely performed the highest aradhana of Bhagavan Sri Hari.”This verse is found in the Bhagavatam,
anayārādhito nūnaṁ
bhagavān harir īśvaraḥ
“This one amongst us has surely performed the highest worship. Thus she has received the name Radhika. That is why being very much pleased with Her, Govinda has left us in the Rasa-sthali and went off with Her to a solitary place.” (SB. 10.30.28)

Radha’s love for Krishna excels that of all others!

This love of Srimati Radharani is really the guiding light of all Gaudiya Vaishnavas. See, in this world everyone is seeking happiness and the greatest amount of happiness is found in love. If that is the guiding principle here in this world, why should this not be found in the ultimate reality from where everything originates?

There in the spiritual world this guiding principle takes on a motto, ‘Everything for Krishna, nothing for myself!’ Only those who live by this motto are entitled to be in the spiritual world. Srila Prabhupada was once asked about his guiding principle in life and he immediately said, “Everything for Krishna, nothing for myself!” Wow!

Such a high standard of devotion is possible only for personalities who have come under the shelter of Srimati Radharani. The great souls – the mahatmas – are totally sheltered at Her lotus feet.

They are no longer under the influence of the material energy which makes one selfishly struggle for one’s own pleasure. They are under the protection of the internal energy.

In the Garga Samhita we find a wonderful pastime where Radha goes to Siddhashram. She heard that anyone who would visit that holy place would certainly meet Krishna. After arriving She took Her bath and afterwards, She was carried on a decorated palanquin around this holy place.

Krishna was aware that Radha would be there and wishing to impress upon all His queens the superexcellence of Her devotion, He took all of them (sixteen thousand!) to this holy place. He wanted them to meet Her and see for themselves.

So all the queens of Krishna stood there and discussed amongst themselves, “Why is Krishna so much talking about Radha? Why is Krishna saying that, ‘I love Radha eternally and She loves Me eternally?’”

Satyabhama objected, “Am I not beautiful? Is Krishna not also very much inspired by me? After all, has He not gone to the heavenly planets and brought from there the highly fragrant parijata tree and planted it directly before my door?”

In this way, different queens were wondering about Radharani’s exalted status. When Radharani was brought to the place where they were all standing and discussing, the queens at first saw only a beautiful golden palanquin decorated with flags, ornaments, and a curtain of pearls.

Radharani was staying behind that curtain! Although the queens could not yet see Her, they could smell Her fragrance which had the scent of malati flowers and which pervaded all directions. Bees came to catch that fragrance and frolicked in the air.

Suddenly the queens noticed how Srimati Radharani very carefully placed Her lotus feet on the ground by first touching it with Her graceful toes and only then gradually resting the entire foot on the ground, which was instantaneously covered by flowers.

This darshan of Radha’s one foot, had an unexpected effect. As soon as they saw this lotus feet from far away, the queens were overcome by the overwhelming beauty of Sri Radha and suddenly fainted. It really was as if the sun had risen and all of the sudden all the minor stars fainted or as Srila Rupa Goswami says, “The brilliance of millions upon millions of full moons pales before the opulent light of the nails of Your lotus feet.”

When Srimati Radharani however came out of the palanquin She did not notice anything. She only had eyes for Krishna. She loves Krishna so much that every sense of Her is focused on Him and even when Krishna is not present, She still sees Krishna in Her pangs of separation.

But now She was standing before the Lord and exclaimed, “Now, when I see you, My life is a success, My austerity is a success and My coming to this holy place of pilgrimage, Siddhashram – everything has turned into a wonderful success.”

Radha and Krishna briefly spoke at that time – but because there were so many outsiders to their confidential relationship around, they quickly parted ways.
In the evening when all the lights went out and everyone took rest, Rukmini noticed that there was still light in Krishna’s tent, so she went to Krishna and asked Him, “My Lord, you are not sleeping. Why not?”

Krishna answered, “Because My Radha is not yet asleep. Radha is accustomed to drink milk before bedtime because She is from Vrindavan and without this She can’t sleep and that is the reason why also I can’t sleep.”

Rukmini who wished Krishna to be in comfort immediately offered, ‘Well, then I will bring Her some milk’. She went into the kitchen, personally prepared the milk, and then personally brought it to the tent of Srimati Radharani. Respectfully, but also a little uneasy Rukmini addressed Radha, “I have come on Krishna’s request to give you milk.” Radharani broke into a most beautiful smile and eagerly took the cup and emptied it at once.

A little later Rukmini came back to the tent of Krishna to massage the Lord’s feet as it was her custom in the night. But when Rukmini saw the soles of Krishna’s lotus feet, she was shocked. They were covered with blisters! She cried out, “My Lord, You have burned Your feet!” Krishna looked at Her sternly and said, “Oh, foolish Rukmini, it was you who burned My feet.” “What? I have not burned Your feet!”

Krishna replied, “When you cooked that milk, you boiled it and not thinking about the right temperature, you brought the glass of milk to Radha’s tent. Srimati Radharani became so enthusiastic that She immediately poured down the milk because it came from Me. And because My lotus feet are always in Her heart, when She drank that hot milk, My feet got burned.”

For the first time Rukmini could now understand why Srimati Radhika is so dear to Krishna – She holds the lotus feet of Her Lord always in Her heart. Therefore, the Narada-pancharatraglorifies Her as:

· Prema-priya- She passionately loves Krishna;
· Prema-rupa – She is the form of all transcendental love;
· Prema-tarangini – She is an ocean filled with waves of transcendental love and
· Prema-datri – She is the giver of that transcendental love.

Srimati Radharani can be worshipped very nicely when we are aware of Her special position. Srila Prabhupada recommended, “Instead of directly offering a flower to Krishna, you just put it in the hands of Radharani and say, ’Kindly take this flower and offer it to Krishna!’ Then Krishna will accept. You can pray, ‘Radharani, kindly be merciful and tell about me to Your Krishna, to Your Krishna. Krishna is Yours!’”

And Srila Prabhupada ends, “So you have to approach Krishna through Radharani. Worship Radharani very nicely and be happy!”

On the auspicious appearance day of Srimati Radharani we can offer Her puspanjali or flowers.

Another very special and easy way to worship Srimati Radharani on Her appearance day is to chant the Holy Names keeping in mind that the “Hare” in the Hare Krishna maha mantra is the name which is most frequently there in the mantra (Her name “Hare” is present eight times while Krishna’s and Rama’s names are each four times there). While chanting, have a picture of Srimati Radharani in front of you.

So you can offer flowers to that picture and then chant with love this or another prayer:
“Oh, Srimati Radharani! Amongst all the beloved gopis of Krishna, You are His most cherished jewel, therefore kindly be pleased upon me and quickly shower Your mercy by including me amongst Your family members!”
This is a prayer by Srila Rupa Goswami.

Wishing All A Very Wonderful celebration of Srimati Radharani and may She bless us despite our present imperfections! Srimati Radharani ki jay!

MIND OPENING PRAYERS

JANMASHTAMI MEDITATIONS

LOOKING BACK WITH A NEW SET OF EYES

"We shape our life by looking ahead, but we only make sense of it by looking back." It’s true. We humans live forward, but we understand life backward. Pressing the replay button in our lives and re-examining what happened is always helpful, especially when we can recognize the divine hand in it.

The question for a practicing Bhakti Yogi is, how can we reflect on the past and understand that everything that occurred was unfolding with a purpose? How can we acknowledge that it is Krishna who is (and always was) actively guiding our lives? Adopting this new way of seeing will transform a theoretical belief into a practical realization of God, inviting deeper insights into our lives.

Let's try to learn the mind-opening prayers of Queen Kunti. Looking back at her eventful life, which was filled with intense and difficult moments, she does not complain nor blame the Lord. Rather, she recognizes the Lord’s loving hand throughout.

Queen Kunti starts her prayers by acknowledging how difficult it is to understand Krishna: “Being beyond the range of limited sense perception, You are the eternally irreproachable factor covered by the curtain of maya (deluding energy).” However, she quickly composes herself and connects beautifully with the Lord through a three-step process that can also direct our own efforts to approach the Lord:
1. First, Queen Kunti takes shelter in chanting Krishna’s divine names. This is also how we can best approach the Lord—through singing His names with enthusiasm: govindaya namo namah (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.21).

Instant connection!

2. Next, she bows down to Krishna’s enchanting beauty by meditating on His lotus-like navel, the garland of lotus flowers that beautifies His dark blue form, His glances, which are as cool as a lotus flower, and His feet, whose soles are engraved with the sign of the lotus. In other words, she meditates on the Lord’s captivating beauty. (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.22) In meditating like this, we come “face to face” with the Lord.

3. Queen Kunti’s third step in approaching the Lord is especially potent in awakening devotional feelings and serves as an example of “looking back with a new set of eyes.” She recollects that in the midst of all the turmoil and painstaking events in her life, Krishna was present and showered her with His mercy. Being aware of Krishna’s loving presence during those times, she invokes the close, affectionate, and caring God—the One who never abandons His devotees and is always by their side. (SB 1.8.23-24)

Queen Kunti’s approach offers a beautiful example of first becoming aware of Krishna (steps 1 and 2) and then, in step 3, looking back with devotional eyes to recognize the Lord’s hand and heart behind life’s events. By introducing Krishna into the equation as the ultimate orchestrator and merciful guide, we begin to find answers that would otherwise remain beyond our reach.

Another wonderful example of recognizing Krishna’s hand during the different phases of our life can be found in the words of a devotee who, though unable to fully understand the Lord’s plan at the time, can now clearly see His intentions in retrospect.

(Tip: read this slowly):

O Lord—O most merciful Master. Now I can understand that Your heart melted with compassion when You saw me suffering in my material illusions. Thus, You took on the form of Sri Guru and came to cut me away from the jaws of the crocodile of ignorance—just as You did when You released Gajendra from the deadly grips of the crocodile by Your illuminating Sudarshana disk.

Even early on in a time long past, You planned to make me a servant of Your lotus feet. With this in mind, You recited the syllables of the divine mantra – Your sound forms—into my ears and eradicated all my inner misery. You purified me further by repeatedly and patiently engaging me in hearing, chanting, and remembering Your holy names and attributes. You bestowed upon me the association of Your devotees, who taught me how to serve You. What kindness have You shown me—but what have I done to reciprocate?

(Paraphrased from Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura’s Madhurya Kadambini 8.9)

We could all write similar prayers if we follow Queen Kunti’s three-step process of approaching the Lord and looking back with a new set of eyes:
Begin by connecting with the Lord through chanting and meditating on His beauty.

Then, ask yourself questions such as “Where and when did Krishna appear in my life?” “What merciful arrangements did He make—arrangements that could have come only from Him?” “When did He strengthen my faith, provide special insights, or send devotees who helped me understand my next steps?” “When did He reveal His plan or presence in any other way?”

Explore these events with a new set of eyes, pray for deeper insights, and dwell in the understanding that Krishna is a loving God who has arranged everything for your benefit. Notice the signposts He has placed that provide clear indications of how your life should progress. You will find that the imagined distance between you and the Lord dissolves, allowing you to recognize Krishna in front of you, behind you, above you, and below you.

PRALAMBASURA- THE MOST DEADLY DEMON

Pralambasura represents a very dangerous demon that resides within the heart, the inclination to enjoy the opposite s*x and the inclination to enjoy profit, adoration and distinction. This means the inclination for gross and subtle s*x. The people in this world think this is the goal of life. Most of the songs, most of the television, most of movies, most of the books, most of the magazines, most of the product you buy in the market are centered on this enjoyment. Such a powerful force Pralambasura is, very difficult to overcome. And it appears like our friend. Like Pralambasura appeared as Krishna’sdear intimate lifelong friend. So similarly these desires appear the desire for profit, adoration and distinction and the desire for other types of physical activities. They promise us happiness. But they cheat us. They kill the inclination for Krishna consciousness within our heart. So we must be very careful.

And Bhaktivinod Thakur explains there are two demons in Vrindavan that Balaram killed, Dhenukasura and Pralambasura. Dhenukasura represents ignorance of knowledge of the soul through materialistic intelligence. And Pralambasura represents the inclination to enjoy the opposite s*x and profit, adoration and distinction both gross and subtle. And Thakur Bhaktivinod explains that these two anarthas have to be overcome by the endeavor of the devotee under the guidance and instruction of the spiritual master the devotee must endeavor with all sincerity. It’s not just grace. Grace in the sense that grace of Balaram would come, the grace of Balaram through guru tatva will come to exterminate these demons forever providing we really really struggle and endeavor to give up the propensity for profit, adoration, distinction and gross sense gratification. Thus endeavor praying to guru and Krishna and chanting the holy names we can become blessed by the causeless mercy of the Lord.
