I hope UGC might have thought twice before scrapping M.Phil. and now MA for Ph.D.?
Just think about it, now what are we going to make out of the Ph.D.?
The recent changes in the education landscape, particularly the discontinuation of the M.Phil. degree and the revised norms for Ph.D. admission, have sparked significant discussions and concerns. Let’s delve into some of the key points:
The decision to scrap M.Phil. and MA has implications:
Increased Ph.D. Supply: Some argue that this move will lead to an influx of Ph.D. candidates. However, this could potentially benefit private universities, allowing them to hire faculty members at lower salaries.
Quality Concerns: Private universities may admit more Ph.D. students without ensuring that professors have adequate training in research methodology. This could compromise the quality of research.
Faculty Shortage: Government universities already struggle to hire regular faculty, with 30% to 50% of seats remaining vacant. Who will mentor these Ph.D. students? Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) or guest faculty?
Burden on Young Faculty: Many private universities lack research quality due to the heavy workload on young faculty (e.g., NAAC, IQAC, repetitive exams). Now, they face the additional responsibility of supervising more Ph.D. students.
Applied Courses and Infrastructure: Shortage of infrastructure and trained faculty affects applied courses. Introducing more untrained Ph.D. students may exacerbate the situation.
Unemployment and Industry Relevance: India’s educated youth already grapple with high unemployment. Pursuing Ph.D. options may delay their entry into industry jobs, where trained individuals are preferred.
Parental Investment: Parents invest hard-earned money in their children’s education. If Ph.D. lacks significant advantages, it becomes a questionable investment.

Who so ever is speaking against New Education Policy, Universities and Government is just pushing them away from their positions. But "if higher education is without debate and discussion, then why we need it at all." Why not we just take online recorded classes and get degrees and close all the universities? If we just want them not to think, discuss or debate on important decisions.
In coming decades, year by year, we all are going to regret all of this, but it's going to be late. And we believe it or not, today we are silent, so we all are part of this big launch of fraud with education of the youth.
