The history of St.Michael's is the history of Pravithanam too. Established in 1919, St.Augustine's Malayalam Medium School, a humble initiative of St.Augustine's Church Pravithanam.It was started due to the inspiration and motivation of Rao Sahib O.M.Cherian, who was then the head of Kottayam Educational District. Then the school had an industrious leadership of Rev. Fr.Mathew Chirayil,who was the Assistant Vicar. Rev.Fr. Varkeychan Chandrankunnel was the manager of the school. Late Mr. Krishnan Nair was the first headmaster.
When our school has become a complete vernacular Higher Grade School, headmaster was Mr.M.C.Kuriakose, a famous orator and member of Legislative Assembly. It is worthwhile to mention the inspiration given to school by Mar Thomas Kurialaserry, who was then the Bishop of Changanacherry.
English Middle School started on 22nd June 1923. Then Mr. T.M. Thomas became the headmaster. The service
rendered to the school by most Rev. Dr.Mathew Kavukattu is to be mentioned. Then Mr. James Kandathil came in to the position of the headmaster. He was succeeded by Rev.Fr.Abraham Vadakkel, who was a famous figure in the literary circle too. When Fr. Vadakkel transferred to Chirakadavu School as the headmaster , Rev.Fr.C.T. Kottaram became the headmaster of St.Michael's.His appointment was on 01-07-1942.The leadership of Rev.Fr.Kottaram paved the way for the growth of the school. Due to the continuous effort of Rev.Fr. Kottaram and the local people, the school had been upgraded to high school by the Government. Then our medium of instruction was changed from English to Malayalam.
In 2014 the school was upgraded to the status of a Higher Secondary School with a Science batch. It was a dream come true when his Excellency Mar. Joseph Kallarangattu laid foundation stone for HSS block on 26-09-2014. A commerce batch is also sanctioned in the academic year 2014-2015.
The present manager is Rev.Fr. Thomas Nadackal. He is a renowned translator and he had translated many books to Malayalam. He has won Sahitya Akedmi Award too. His masterpiece in translation is Don Quixote. Under the Leadership of Manager,Headmaster Sunny Augustine , Staff ,PTA and School Alumni Association are working hard for the progress and development of the school.
