1. Introduction
On 18th August 2026, a Disaster Management Awareness Program was conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Pacheykhani. The program aimed to educate students and teachers on essential life-saving skills and disaster preparedness measures through theoretical explanation combined with practical, hands-on demonstrations. The session was well received and actively participated in by both students and teaching staff.
2. Objective of the Program
The primary objective of the program was to build awareness and basic competency among students and teachers in responding to common emergencies and natural disasters, thereby strengthening school-level disaster preparedness and reducing panic and casualties during actual emergency situations.
3. Topics Covered with Demonstration
1. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): NDRF personnel demonstrated the correct technique of performing CPR on a victim who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped, including chest compressions and rescue breathing, with hands-on practice for students.
2. Internal and External Injuries: Participants were taught how to identify and provide first-aid for internal and external injuries, including bleeding control, bandaging techniques, and safe handling of injured persons before medical help arrives.
3. Drowning Case Management: The team explained the step-by-step rescue and revival procedure for drowning victims, covering safe water rescue techniques and the immediate first-aid response required after a person is pulled out of water.
4. Fire Safety: A live demonstration on fire safety was conducted, covering the use of fire extinguishers, evacuation procedures, and precautions to prevent and control fire outbreaks in a school environment.
5. Choking: NDRF personnel demonstrated the Heimlich maneuver and other choking-relief techniques to help clear an obstructed airway in both children and adults.
6. Earthquake Preparedness: The program covered the Drop, Cover, and Hold-on technique, safe evacuation routes, and do's and don'ts during and after an earthquake, along with a mock demonstration for students.
4. Interactive Session
Following the demonstrations, an interactive question-and-answer session was held with students and teachers, focused specifically on:
● Safety precautions during thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
● Identification of and safe response to LPG cylinder gas leaks, including immediate dos and don'ts.
The interactive format allowed participants to clarify doubts and discuss real-life scenarios, which enhanced the practical understanding of the concepts taught.
5. Outcome
The program successfully enhanced the disaster preparedness knowledge of students and teachers at Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Pacheykhani. Participants gained practical exposure to life-saving techniques and are now better equipped to respond effectively during emergencies such as medical crises, fire outbreaks, earthquakes, and gas leak incidents.
6. Conclusion
The Disaster Management Awareness Program conducted by NDRF on 18th August 2026 at Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Pacheykhani, was a valuable initiative in promoting a culture of safety and preparedness among the school community. Such programs are essential in building resilient future generations capable of responding calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
