Library Reform Leads to Improved Reading Skills and Community Engagement

Under the , in the Zila Parishad Union Public School of Somwarkheda, Chikhaldara, efforts were made to transform the perception of books among students and promote reading habits beyond exam preparation. The village, inhabited by economically backward tribal communities, faced challenges of water scarcity and educational backwardness. With the support of the gram panchayat and organisations like Jyotsna and Pratham, the library was reformed, and age-appropriate books were made available for students. Teachers played a crucial role in encouraging the use of the library and reading aloud to the children. The intervention had a remarkable impact, improving reading skills, comprehension, pronunciation, and vocabulary of the students. Additionally, the library facilitated leadership development, involvement of youth, and stronger engagement between the school administration and parents, leading to plans for a community library accessible to all villagers.
