About The School:
The North Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School is one of the premier educational institute not only of the Lakhimpur district but it is also one of the premier institute of Assam. This premier institute which has completed its glorious hundred years of journey, boasts of having its alumina all over the world. It has produced many well known personalities who now hold important positions all over India and even abroad. The institute has in fact produced many eminent personalities who have been able to bring laurels in their fields.
As history says, Assam was free from any kind of suppression till 1826. It was only after 1826 that Assam came under the rule of the British. Fourteen years after that in the year 1840, a upper primary school was established in Dibrugarh of then Lakhimpur district. Two years after that there was established in North Lakhimpur upper primary school where the present veterinary hospital stands. And this is the very base from which the present North Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School was formed.
The British Government introduced the Bengali medium of instruction in all the schools and government offices of Assam for this own easy governance. And thus the Lakhimpur school also had Bengali as its medium of instruction. Literary scholar and eminent personality Padmanath Gohain Baruah, the first president of the “ASSAM SAHITYA SABHA” passed out with distinction from this very Bengali medium school. Another distinguished scholar, Panindra Nath Gogoi also passed out with distinction from this very institute.
It was in 1871 that this Bengali medium school developed from an upper primary school to middle school and shifted its base to the present place where situated the west part of two storied court building.
In 1886 this Bengali medium school became an Assamese medium school. The local people opened a branch of the English language and there by was born a “Minor English School”.
At this time when the Assamese language had lost its importance, it was Panindra Nath Gogoi who wrote a book for children in Assamese. He was the first Head master of the Assamese school in the year 1900. He died at the young age of 29 years.
In the year 1913 the Minor English School was developed into a Minor High English school by opening the classes of seven and eight standard. In the year 1914 WORLD WAR I started between the English and the German war reached in climax till the year 1918. The classes of nine and ten standard of the school were run privately during this period. Unfortunately, in the year 1918 the school caught a huge fire and the entire school was engulfed in the flames. Luckily the headmaster’s quarter was saved as it was a little far away from the main school building.
Some Conscious Citizens re-built the school with aid from the Government and soon a new school building was built at a very fast pace in the ‘U’ pattern.
In the year 1923, the Government declared the school as a full fledged Government school and included the classes of IX and X standard in the regular curriculum. With this ended need of the search for a better educational instituted of the people of Lakhimpur.
After independence the Assam Government rebuilt the school with 24 rooms in the ‘H’ pattern. Soon after the construction was completed, the students, teachers and the office staff together started the school with a new zeal and enthusiasm.
Accordingly in the year 1958 the Higher Secondary section was introduced both in the Arts and Science stream and the school came to be henceforth known as the North Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School.
Earlier the centre for Metric examination was in Jorhat. Later in 1938 the centre was shifted to Tezpur. The students had to face many hardships to go and give their examination. It was only in the year 1942 that the centre was brought to North Lakhimpur to the great relief to the students and parents of Lakhimpur.
Today, the North Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School has completed its glorious hundred years of existence. It has gone through many hardships and still it celebrates its centenary celebration. This institute has produced many eminent educationalist, politicians, poets, scholars, dramatists, writers, orators, world famous scientist, doctors, engineers, lawyers well known players and also artists. All these people work together for the development of the human race.
The school now has one completed concrete building beyond the old building. There is sufficient urinal and has running water system. Drinking water facilities are also available. A new library room and computer laboratory is under finished. The science laboratory has all modern facilities.
