🏔️ Census 2027: Ladakh Begins Self-Enumeration

On 17 August 2026, Ladakh began Self-Enumeration for the second phase of Census 2027.

🔹 Self-Enumeration will continue from 17–31 August 2026.
🔹 Population Enumeration will be conducted from 1–30 September 2026.
🔹 Ladakh is set to become the first Union Territory to complete Census 2027.
🔹 Around 637 Enumeration Blocks will be created for complete population coverage.
🔹 The schedule takes into account Ladakh’s harsh winters, difficult terrain and limited accessibility.
🔹 Data will cover demographics, education, employment, migration, disability, language and fertility.
🔹 Census 2027 is being conducted digitally across India.

🏗️ 944 Development Projects Launched in Rajasthan

On 16 August 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 944 development projects across Rajasthan.

🔹 The projects cover 15 districts with a combined value of ₹5,755 crore.
🔹 A 21-foot statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also unveiled in Chittorgarh.
🔹 The statue was installed at a cost of over ₹1.5 crore on Vajpayee’s death anniversary.
🔹 Rajasthan now has 772 Eklavya Vidyapeeths for tribal students, according to Shah.
🔹 Under Har Ghar Nal Se Jal, household water connections increased from 11 lakh to 64 lakh.

These initiatives highlight the focus on infrastructure, education, tribal development and water connectivity in Rajasthan. 🇮🇳

On 13th August 2026, the Union Law Ministry launched the revamped India Code Portal to make legal information more accessible, transparent, and user-friendly.

🔹 The portal introduces AI-assisted search, semantic search, and speech-based search for quick access to legal information.
🔹 Provides multilingual access to laws in all 22 languages listed under the Eighth Schedule.
🔹 Users can access amendments, legislative history, and links between Acts and subordinate legislation.
🔹 Integrated with the e-Gazette ecosystem and offers QR-enabled access to legislative documents.
🔹 Acts as a unified repository of Central, State, and Union Territory laws and regulations.

🩺 Supreme Court on Cancer as a Notifiable Disease

On 11 August 2026, the Supreme Court asked the remaining 19 States and Union Territories to consider declaring cancer a “Notifiable Disease” to facilitate early detection, strengthen disease surveillance and ensure better patient care.

🔹 Notifiable Disease: Cancer cases would be officially reported to health authorities, improving monitoring and early detection.
🔹 Current Status: 17 out of 36 States/UTs have already notified cancer as a notifiable disease.
🔹 The direction came during the hearing of a PIL seeking nationwide notification of cancer.
🔹 The Centre informed the Court that health is a State subject under the Constitution.

🤝 NCDC (Amendment) Bill, 2026 Passed by Parliament

On 12 August 2026, Parliament passed the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha approving it after the Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill.

🔹 Direct Funding: NCDC can provide loans and grants directly to cooperative societies and entities involved in cooperative development.
🔹 State Government Funding: State governments can extend NCDC funding to entities engaged in cooperative development.
🔹 NCDC: Established in 1963, NCDC provides financial assistance for the organised and sustained development of the cooperative sector.
🔹 Cooperative Network: India has 8 lakh+ cooperative societies with around 30 crore members.

🏛️ Kerala to Become ‘Keralam’? 🇮🇳
📢 Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026

The Lok Sabha passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 by voice vote on 11 August 2026, proposing to change the name of the state from Kerala to ‘Keralam’.

🔑 Key Highlights

🔹 Proposed Name: Kerala ➡️ Keralam

🔹 Constitutional Basis: The proposal is linked to Article 3 of the Constitution, which lays down the procedure for altering the name of an existing State.

🔹 Kerala Assembly Resolution: The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on 24 June 2024, requesting the Union Government to initiate the name-change process.

🔹 Why ‘Keralam’? The resolution highlighted that the state is known as ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam, whereas ‘Kerala’ is mentioned in the First Schedule of the Constitution.

India and the United States are taking their civil and commercial space cooperation to the next level, with discussions on future Moon exploration, scientific research, and human spaceflight technologies.

🔹 Artemis Accords: India and the US agreed to advance discussions on open scientific data sharing under the Artemis Accords.

🔹 Moon Base Programme: NASA has invited ISRO to explore participation in its ambitious Moon Base programme, opening new possibilities for long-term lunar exploration.

🔹 9th CSJWG Meeting: Discussions were held during the 9th India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG) meeting hosted by ISRO in Bengaluru on 5–6 August 2026.

🌍 Unusual Ozone Concentration Over North Bay of Bengal

Scientists have detected an unusually high concentration of ozone in the upper atmosphere over the North Bay of Bengal, providing new insights into how air currents transport ozone through the stratosphere.

🔹 Key Points
Research Campaign: Conducted under Phase-I of the NetRAD-ASMA campaign, involving Indian research institutions.
Observation Network: Data from atmospheric radars, weather balloons, satellites and advanced atmospheric models were analysed.
Radar Observations: The indigenous 206.5 MHz Stratosphere-Troposphere Radar at ARIES, Nainital, worked with radars at Haringhata, Gadanki and Kochi.
Satellite Confirmation: Aura Microwave Limb Sounder and INSAT-3DR observations independently confirmed the unusual ozone structure.

On 10 August 2026, the Lok Sabha passed the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 amid continuous Opposition protests and without discussion.

🔹 Key Points
Objective: To improve efficiency, independence, transparency and uniformity in the appointment, qualifications and service conditions of tribunal members.
National Tribunals Commission: Proposed to oversee the administration and functioning of tribunals.
Role of Tribunals: They complement courts in specialised areas such as taxation, company law, environment, securities and intellectual property.
Judicial Reforms: Aims to strengthen institutional efficiency and ensure speedy justice.
Commission Structure: The proposed Commission will be headed by a former Supreme Court judge or former Chief Justice of a High Court.
