Dual Nature: Ammonium Nitrate is widely used as a nitrogen-rich fertilizer (khaad) in farming due to its low cost and ease of availability, making it simple to transport. This agricultural necessity, however, conflicts directly with national security.

Explosive Threat: Pure NH4 NO3 is an oxidizer. When mixed with a simple hydrocarbon fuel like diesel or petrol, it creates ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil), a potent and easily prepared high explosive used in terrorist attacks.

Key Indicator: The rapid decomposition of NH4 NO3 produces significant volumes of toxic orange or yellowish-brown smoke. This is primarily Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2 ), serving as a clear chemical signature indicating an NH4 NO3 -based explosion.
