A short story by me, titled - Othello, or Ramayan?
Mimi and Roohi had been good friends since childhood. Both were great in drama and acting skills. Their other friends often used to compare their talents, and the resulting opinion always used to be divided. Both were greatly talented, after all.
One day, the friends apprised Roohi and Mimi of a mega drama competition being organized in their city. The winning team would get INR 1 lakh in cash, and the winner would be decided based on two equal parameters: jury points and public/audience points. Both of them decided to participate.
While Mimi and team made a drama on Shakespeare's Othello, Roohi's team opted for Ramayana, with Roohi playing the role of Sita along with Hriday, her best friend, playing Ram opposite her.
All their friends kept gossiping hard on which team would win. Given Othello's unmatched popularity in drama, they could reach a consensus this time - Mimi would win and Roohi would be a distant runner-up. They began to point out to Roohi that her choice of drama was 'run of the mill' and began to congratulate Mimi in advance.
And finally, the D-day arrived. Mimi and team gave a performance full of intensity and emotions. Once their drama concluded, the auditorium thundered in applause, and the jury members could be seen talking to each other in excitement.
Roohi and team had also prepared well; however, she had been feeling low over the past week or so, and had not been able to get over it. Hriday walked to Roohi and told her to bring her sadness alive in the role of Sita. She nodded, as their turn to perform had come.
The drama began. Hriday and team gave their best in their respective roles of Ram, Ravan, Lakshman, Hanuman, and more. Roohi heeded to Hriday's advice, and the way she wept in the Ashok Vatika scene brought the entire auditorium to pin-drop silence.
Many even had tears in their eyes. In the concluding scene, Roohi hugged Hriday as if she were thanking him for always standing by her side irrespective of thick and thin. The auditorium had witnessed the love between Sita and Ram come alive that evening. The applause was thunderous and long; however, the jury team didn't seem too amused.
Everyone was waiting for the results then with bated breath. The jury rated Othello 8/10 and Ramayan as 7/10. Everyone thought then that the winners had already been decided, and the audience poll would remain a mere formality.
Those results were also out soon. Othello and Ramayan had got tied at the top spot, as the former got rated 8 and the latter, 9. The organizers announced that the chief guest, city's superintendent of police, Sh. Mahesh Kumar, would get to choose the winner and announce it on the stage.
Sh. Kumar, on stage, told everyone that though he had decided the winner, he'd first give the rationale. He said, "I find both the performances to be equally good; however, the sheer intensity with which the eternal bond between Ram and Sita was portrayed, left me gasping for breath."
His words had stolen everyone's heart. The entire auditorium not just clapped for team Ramayan, but also gave them a standing ovation.
One year passed. Hriday and Roohi had got happily married and named their new-born son as Luv. Another year later, Luv had a younger brother. Everyone already knew his name.
