Krishna Janmashtami, también conocido simplemente como Janmashtami, es un festival hindú anual que celebra el nacimiento de Krishna, la octava reencarnación del dios Vishnu. Se observa según el calendario luni-solar hindú, en el octavo día (Ashtami) que se superpone con agosto o septiembre del calendario gregoriano.
Es un festival importante y se celebra en toda la India, especialmente en Mathura y Vrindavan. Representaciones de danza-drama de la vida de Krishna de acuerdo con el Bhagavata Purana (como Rasa Lila o Krishna Lila), canto devocional hasta la medianoche cuando Krishna nació, ayuno, una vigilia nocturna (Ratri Jagaran) y un festival el siguiente día son parte de las celebraciones de Janmashtami.
Krishna es el dios de la protección, la compasión, la ternura y el amor, y es una de las divinidades indias más populares y veneradas.
