Breaking Down the #1 OWASP Vulnerability: Broken Access Control 🔓

Broken Access Control is currently ranked #1 in the OWASP Top 10. But what exactly is it, and how does it leave applications vulnerable?

Access control determines who can access what in an application. This vulnerability occurs when a user can access data they shouldn't see, perform actions they aren't authorized for, or bypass permission checks.

A classic example of this is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR). Imagine a banking application uses the URL bank.com/account?id=100. If an attacker simply changes it to bank.com/account?id=101 and the application shows another user's details, the system has failed to check authorization.

When attackers bypass this security layer, the impact can be devastating:

Privilege escalation: Users gaining admin-level access.
Unauthorized data exposure: Sensitive data becoming visible.
Data modification: Attackers altering or deleting records.
Account takeover: Full control of another user's account.

How to fix it:

Deny access by default.
Validate permissions on every request.
Ensure secure access control is enforced on the server side.
