Abstract of talk:
With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the resulting framework of Industry 4.0, the built environment sector also has the opportunity to leapfrog to more efficient production and business models; and value chains. Such a transformation is possible through the convergence of existing and emerging technologies that are part of this paradigm. The resulting transformative framework is called Construction 4.0. Modeled after the concept of Industry 4.0, the idea of Construction 4.0 is based on a confluence of trends and technologies that promise to reshape the way we design, construct, and operate our built environment assets. Broadly, the framework consists of two main components: (1) cyber-physical systems and (2) digital ecosystems. Each of these two components is further supported by emerging technologies and systems such as IoT, robotics, industrialized construction, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, drones, and digital fabrication. It is envisioned that the current challenges that the industry faces can be overcome by using the Construction 4.0 framework. This talk will discuss key concepts, opportunities, and challenges posed by Construction 4.0. The speaker will also discuss how construction during and after the pandemic will be influenced by Construction 4.0.
