A polar bear's preferred habitat is sea ice. But the bears of Canada’s Western Hudson Bay spend each summer on land when the sea ice melts. Then in the autumn, the bears congregate on shore and wait for the ice to return.

Climate change is having a major impact on these animals, as melting sea ice means less space to live and hunt. Track the movements of bears online: http://wwfgap.org/tracker/polar-bear/whb

Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) has experimented with the technology delivery model, which takes into consideration the ecosystem, the market, the entrepreneurship and the skill. VIB, Nimpith & NITTTR, Kolkata have organized a Two Week "International Capacity Development Program on Training of Trainers in Utilizing Biotechnology for Sustainable Agriculture for Rural Youth" with the Support from UNESCO-UNEVOC.

26/09/2015

Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) through the project “An effort to organize the rock bee honey collectors in Sunderbans with S & T intervention for better productivity” has taken an integrated approach of scientific ways of honey collection by proper training of honey hunters (in 5 target blocks), maintaining good natural colonies, simultaneously collection of quality honey and fetching good price of collected honey by suitable market linkage and value added products. 246 honey collectors have been organized in 40 groups in the target area – of them 51% are tribals. VIB has provided them the collection gears to protect them from the bee sting. A honey processing unit has been installed for the scientific processing of the product at VIB and the processed honey is branded as “Sundarban Honey”. The programme was initiated with the support from SEED Division of DST, GoI and now it has emerged as a bigger project with the support from KVIC, GoI.
