Imagine an entire twenty-story concrete building that can store energy like a giant battery!!
Seems impossible, doesn't it?
But, thanks to unique research from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, together they have now succeeded in developing a world-first concept for a rechargeable cement-based battery.

The concept involves first a cement-based mixture, with small amounts of short carbon fibers added to increase the conductivity and flexural toughness. Then, embedded within the mixture is a metal-coated carbon-fiber mesh — iron for the anode, and nickel for the cathode.

The fact that the battery is rechargeable is its most important quality, and the possibilities for utilization if the concept is further developed and commercialized are almost staggering.

The air we breathe contains 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide and small amounts of other gases. Most commercial oxygen is produced using the cryogenic distillation process which produces oxygen that is 99+% pure.

In this process, the Gas plant takes in air from the atmosphere into a compressor and pass it through a chamber which decreases its temperature up to -200°C. Now from this cold compressed gas, carbon dioxide is seperated out as Dry ice and this cold air is changed from gas to liquid form which is further sent to the Air Distillation column, where all other gases are seperated and only oxygen in liquid form is left behind. This liquid oxygen is collected in a cryogenic vessel or tank which is transferred to hospitals.

Pre-Covid, the demand for MO was barely 700 metric tonnes (MT) per day; it rose to over 2,800 MT daily following the pandemic and is now 5,500 MT/day and still rising. (Source: ET)
However, DRDO said it would be setting up 500 medical oxygen plants in the country under the PM cares fund.

Daylight can now be brought underground, thanks to NTU Singapore scientists who have built a ‘smart’ device to harvest the daylight to light up underground spaces.

Like a magnifying glass, the device shaped like a crystal ball focuses sunlight into one point where it is collected at the end of a fiber cable then transported to the other end that is deployed underground where the light is emitted. This amazing innovation is so light-weight and hence do not require any heavy-duty motors to align the mirror dish to sun as in case of conventional solar harvesting technology. Also the components aren't exposed to several severe weather conditions.

Face masks, now an essential part of our daily lives, helping stop the spread of covid-19, aren’t particularly friendly for the planet or the oceans. In light of this, a company wants to spin this into something beneficial for the environment.

Paper Seed Co, a social enterprise from the outskirts of Mangaluru in southern Karnataka, has come up with a face mask that will not only protect people from the virus, but when discarded, will bloom into a plant.

These cotton masks embedded with plant seeds are actually made from recycled rags. The outer cover is made from cotton plup utilising various scrap materials collected from the garment industry, and the inner linings are made from soft cotton cloth.
This innovative eco-friendly idea has struck a chord with the public and has created a huge buzz online.

Though still a niche market, “environment-friendly chocolates”, which are being developed with low-waste processes and social consciousness, are gaining a steady, loyal customer base in India.

New South Indian startups like Tamil nadu based Kocoatrait, Karnataka based Naviluna artisan chocolate, Puducherry based Mason & Co are producing sustainable chocolates.
At Kocoatrait, chocolate wrappers are made up of discarded cotton cloth and cocoa shells. Naviluna artisan chocolate uses recyclable and biodegradable materials for packaging. Mason & Co mix chocolates with low carbon footprint.

The chocolate making process also imbibed circular economy principles, where waste is reduced and the resources are put back into the product cycle in a continual manner.After consumption, the wrapper can be used for other purposes, like a bookmark or a greeting card, without it going directly going into the bin as is the case with many conventional chocolate brands.

Do you also ponder if we are really made of stardust or it's just a saying?

We are made of stardust, the saying goes, and a pair of studies including University of Michigan research finds that may be more true than we previously thought.
The first study, led by U-M researcher Jie Li, finds that most of the carbon on Earth was likely delivered from the interstellar medium, the material that exists in space between stars in a galaxy.

Previously, researchers thought carbon in the Earth came from molecules that were initially present in nebular gas, which then accreted into a rocky planet when the gases were cool enough for the molecules to precipitate. Li and her team, point out in this study that the gas molecules that carry carbon wouldn't be available to build the Earth because once carbon vaporizes, it does not condense back into a solid.

Carbon was also likely sequestered into solids within one million years of the sun's birth -- which means that carbon, the backbone of life on earth, survived an interstellar journey to our planet.

Quantum computers have a limited time to perform calculations before their useful quantum nature, which we call coherence, breaks down. A new algorithm, the Variational Fast Forwarding (VFF) algorithm is the one that fast forwards simulations could bring greater use ability to current and near-term quantum computers, opening the way for applications to run past strict time limits that hamper many quantum calculations.

In principle, the approach allows scientists to quantum-mechanically simulate a system for as long as they like. Practically speaking, the errors that build up as simulation times increase limits potential calculations. One quirk of the process is that it takes twice as many qubits to fast forward a calculation than would make up the quantum computer being fast forwarded.

In future work, the Los Alamos researchers plan to explore the limits of the VFF algorithm by increasing the number of qubits they fast forward, and checking the extent to which they can fast forward systems.

Have you ever wondered how butterflies fly?

The fluttery flight of butterflies has so far been somewhat of a mystery to researchers, given their unusually large and broad wings relative to their body size.
Butterflies use a highly effective clap technique, therefore making use of their unique wings. This helps them rapidly take off when escaping predators.

Researchers studied the wingbeats of freely flying butterflies during take-off in a wind tunnel. During the upward stroke, the wings cup, creating an air-filled pocket between them. When the wings then collide, the air is forced out, resulting in a backward jet that propels the butterflies forward. The downward wingbeat has another function: the butterflies stay in the air and do not fall to the ground.

Ever wished for an 'Unhackable' Internet? Yes? Your wish may come true soon!

An internet based on quantum physics will soon enable inherently secure communication. Messages sent over this network will be unhackable.

In the last few years, scientists have learned to transmit pairs of photons across fiber-optic cables in a way that absolutely protects the information encoded in them. The technology relies on a quantum behavior of atomic particles called entanglement. Entangled photons can’t be covertly read without disrupting their content.

Ensuring an unbroken connection over greater distances will require quantum repeaters that extend the network.
Such repeaters are currently in design at Delft and elsewhere. The first should be completed in the next five to six years, says Wehner, with a global quantum network following by the end of the decade.

Astronomers have observed many ‘dead’ galaxies but the process of the death itself hasn’t been observed before — until now.

Using the telescope Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers observed a galaxy, nine billion light years away from the Earth, ejecting nearly half of its star-forming gas and losing fuel.
Galaxies begin to ‘die’ when star formation stops inside them or they start losing material that forms stars.

The ID2299 galaxy is currently ejecting material worth about 10,000 suns every year in the form of cold gas ejection. It is estimated that the galaxy is currently removing 46 per cent of the total cold gas it contains.

The galaxy is still forming new stars very rapidly, but since it is also quickly running out of fuel, the remaining gas will be consumed and the galaxy is likely to be dead within a few million years.

The research team behind the findings believes that the ID2299 galaxy is ejecting monumental amounts of cold gas because of a collision between two galaxies, which eventually merged to form ID2299.
