Ego, in this context meaning “to take over”, polarised to Eco, “to be equal” in accordance with the earth and its sustainability.
Unfortunately, as a selfish species we often allow our self-assured hubris to endorse the ego mentality. Western civilisation inhabits the traits of the ego mentality: pressure, competition and success. Which is detrimental to the survival and ability of our earth to flourish. The excessive pride combined with an inflated ego can lead to the attitude that we, a powerful and intelligent species, rule the earth and have the power to change the course of the earth, without any regard for the millions of other species inhabiting the earth. This endangers the irreplaceable ecosystem that we all depend on.
As aforementioned, the Eco mentality encourages mutual respect to all forms of life, holding the belief that other animals were created with us, not for us. Holding respect for the earth and it’s inhabitants greatly improves the chances of ecosystems thriving and developing. It may be difficult to acknowledge that outside of our own personal bubbles, there are smaller, struggling ecosystems. Seeing ourselves alongside other species, intertwined as a community, belonging to the same planet aids us to be more considerate and respectful. This is the mentality I wish to encourage. The ego mentality depicts selfishness, perpetuating the ideology of the hierarchy in the animal kingdom, viewing humans as top of the pyramid, an elitist view of the world in which we live.
Regretfully, despite all of our success, humans are a pollutive species who contribute to the destruction of our earth more than any other species at an alarming rate, with no remorse or consideration for other species, that live and share the earth with us. Moreover, it’s often forgot that this is the only planet we will ever have and we are slowly destroying it.
Man should be demoted from the undeserving perch which we latch our talons upon and accept our fate as just one of the millions of species that are lucky enough to inhabit such a resourceful earth.
