The HEARTBLEED BUG is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).

The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users

How to stop the leak?

As long as the vulnerable version of OpenSSL is in use it can be abused. Fixed OpenSSL has been released and now it has to be deployed. Operating system vendors and distribution, appliance vendors, independent software vendors have to adopt the fix and notify their users. Service providers and users have to install the fix as it becomes available for the operating systems, networked appliances and software they use.

India ranked lowly 130 in Ookla's average Internet download speed index.

While recent reports have indicated that the average Internet speed in India has been picking up, the latest numbers from Ookla’s Net Index shows that it still lags behind smaller nations like Bhutan, Cambodia, Nepal, Nigeria, Laos and Zimbabwe in terms of Internet download speeds. The company, while showing the average Index data, says that the results were obtained by analysing test results from October 27, 2013 to November 25 of the same year.
The numbers show that India is currently ranked at the 130th position with an average download speed of 4.18Mbps. The survey collected results from 9,346,234 unique IPs, and 2,803147 results have been used for the current Index out of a total number of 43,035,182 tests conducted. This places the country lower down the chain when compared to the average download speed in Nigeria, standing at 5.14Mbps or Nepal, which stands at 4.92Mbps. In contrast, countries like Cambodia, Laos and Bhutan have average download speeds of 4.66Mbps, 4.73Mbps and 4.41Mbps respectively. Zimbabwe boasts a slight higher average of 4.20Mbps.

The top five positions in terms of download speeds went to
Hong Kong at 71.22Mbps,
Singapore at 52.75Mbps,
Romania at 50.26Mbps,
South Korea at 47.20Mbps and
Sweden at 42.35Mbps.

The US ranked 31 with an average download speed of 20.74Mbps while the global average was 16.20Mbps. Countries like Afghanistan, Malawi, Benin and Gambia ranked at the bottom of the Index with average download speeds of 1.13Mbps, 1.16 Mbps, 1.21Mbps, 1.36Mbps and 1.46 Mbps respectively.

A 12th standard boy has created a SHOE THAT CAN CHARGE MOBILE DEVICES AS U WALK. The boy concerned has been identified as RAJESH ADHIKARI from Nainital, and his shoe takes complete advantage of the energy generated when a person walks, in order to charge a mobile phone.

According to a report by ANI, the idea of making such as waterproof charger struck Adhikari when it snowed heavily at his home town, leading to a power blackout. He had built the device to ensure that in such times, one could charge phones at least for basic communication. But this also means users will have to walk enough to charge the device. A new good reason for exercise perhaps!

Talking about the shoe-mobile charger, Adhikari told the news agency, “When we raise our feet, the spring gets released and the dynamo starts revolving, which generates current. We can charge our mobile phones while we are walking.”

The charge can be reportedly used to light a bulb as well, in case of electricity failure. One simply needs to install a battery in the shoe for lighting a bulb. Adhikari also plans to add further improvements to the shoe. He is now reportedly working on a design that will make the shoe a wireless phone charger so that the user can charge a mobile phone by simply walking with it in his/her pocket.

Samsung has released the SDK for their Tizen-based wearables. Their newest crop of wearables all use Tizen (kind of), Samsung’s proprietary OS, which may just be limited to their wearables ambitions. It’s an interesting move for Samsung, as they didn’t release an SDK for previous wearables, but a smart decision when considering current and potential competition.

With the Galaxy Gear — which ran the more popular Android operating system — Samsung kept the device limited to their own designs. Though it could have meant more apps could utilize the device (and really put an end to the media complaining about it being a limited use device), they kept the Galaxy Gear out of the hands of Developers. Now it seems last year’s wearable was Samsung’s big toe in the water.

With the release of a Tizen SDK, Samsung is essentially soft-launching their OS to the world. If Samsung can effectively show that Tizen works well with Android, Developers may be more open to future Tizen devices. Those could be additional wearables, or a smartphone or tablet. For now, it looks as though Samsung is intent on creating an ecosystem around their wearables to compete with others like Pebble, and is likely a preemptive strike against the coming Google wearable SDK.

In the upstart wearable device market, Samsung is already king, selling more devices than any other OEM. The switch to Tizen for their wearables was a curious one, but now seems to signal a
more controlled approach. The SDK will be available today from Samsung’s site, so interested Developers should go ahead and take a look.
