House of Commons, Mock Parliamentary Debating Society Recruitment Form
The end of an era
The woman fondly known as Amma, Tamil Nadu ex-Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram had a very convoluted life since the nascent stages of her life. Her father’s demise at a young age, apathy received from her mother and her family to being coerced into films and being stifled by the superstar of the time MGR. She had never seen the face of struggle but she knew what it was. After abjuring from the film industry, she finally joined politics which was apposite to her persona. She started off as a propaganda secretary in AIADMK to becoming the first opposition leader and then to becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu five
times. The achievements are illustrious but with a tinge. An extremely meritorious student who also got the best outgoing student award but she was a reticent child who also had the stigma attached of being a film star’s kid to add to the misery of her family never going to school to look at her receiving awards and feel pride. When she finally got a friend- like- family, Sasikala Natarajan, her trusted aide who rose to the pinnacle; sometimes who wielded more power than Jayalalitha herself and gave direct orders to the ministers or anyone else who came under Jaya.
Later on, the Mundigram mafia (the family of Sasikala) wanted to overthrow Jayalalitha and make Sasikala the Chief Minister and there have been several doubts regarding Sasikala’s intentions as well and that was the bitter sweet end of her friendship. Her political career was not easy as well. With the demise of MGR, she was a nobody in AIADMK. She had to fight for the support of party members to fight against MGR’s wife Janaki.
An adjunct problem faced by her was 15 cases, four convictions and two disqualifications for CM’s post. Despite all of the struggles she faced she stood tall, a maverick, a sublime creature. As said by Modi; Indian politics has a void now.
Public Discontent is like a chameleon. When we see it, we know it must have been hiding in plain for a while; but until we spot it, we are not even aware of its existence. With the mighty intent of the present government and a superfluous display of precise timing of its unprecedented decision, it has certainly made people aghast! By reinvigorating the spirit of "Arthakranti" proposal made by a Pune based institution, the strong will to remove the rodent of black money is a welcome move, however its implementation is a serious matter of concern as no time window was availed towards a phased demonetization.
Logistical issues of appropriate quantum of notes would be a major issue in the days to come as the demand for notes would outmatch its supply. With the rise in price of gold at the market index, people have already found out new avenues to deposit their untaxed money and proved that "Jugaad" of any strong might is possible! With the introduction of new currency without any tracking facility, prayers are the last resort to save the government on following the path of Muhammad Bin Tughlaq! By controlling the majority of media, sugar coated news is what we receive and public discontent gets camouflaged in issues like US elections. At last, it should be remembered that change needs time and prolonged efforts, and Modi's magical wand is not the one-stop solution to eradicate the menace of corruption!
“Mera Desh badal raha hai, aage badh raha hai!”
This jingle is common in Indian masses as part of current Prime Minister’s election Campaign. We are not endorsing anyone.
But are we really moving forward?
Let’s assume we are. The mindset of common man is evolving. Education is giving them the ability to read and learn between the lines. However, when we are surrounded by stories like a man who imposed in*******se on his wife either by force, threat of force, or when the wife is unable to consent; we turn it to a deaf ear and let it pass by like a normal gossip story. Or other aspect of this reaction is suppression of women in the society and nailing her down to such an extent that the noose is the only way out.
Hence, in a country like India, marriages are seen as a journey of 7 incarnations. The institution of marriage is seen as holy in our country but what interests me is how a partner can corrupt something as holy as marriage. Some believe marriage to be a s*xual contract, where the expense of in*******se is to safeguard her basic materialistic interest. Here is when marital r**e comes into picture. A r**e is a r**e. When you add an adjective to it, it defines how grave and sensitive issue it is. Marital r**e is nothing but a heinous crime; in a case like this the perpetrator is no one else but the victim's spouse only. Marital R**e is more widely experienced by women, though not exclusively. In a country like ours where women are worshipped. The statistics reveals how real it is as 1/3rd of men in India, where spousal r**e is legal admit to have formed forced s*xual relations.
Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) considers the forced s*x in marriages as a crime only when the wife is below age 15. Thus, marital r**e is not a criminal offense under the IPC. Marital r**e victims have to take recourse to the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 (PWDVA). The PWDVA, which came into force in 2006, outlaws marital r**e. However, it offers only a civil remedy for the offence.
But by not criminalising marital r**e does Indian judiciary and government want to send a message across that just because a woman is married loses the right to say no or loses the right to approach the court even after being endangered of her integrity.
Internationally too pleas have been made to criminalise marital r**e in India and this has been made by the United Nations through its Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women. It is indeed saddening that even the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi has said "incorporating cases of marital r**e within the legal framework would put stress on family system and strain family ties”. However, she still has not been able to explain how marital r**e would strain familial ties.
Marital r**e is r**e. I don't understand why a victim of s*xual assault should be denied justice just because she is married to her tormentor.
Does this appeal to the sensibilities of new - age country of ours?
Also, we would like to question you all is it only the fault of government authorities that such crimes are rising to an unexpected levels or we too are responsible?

Do you believe that you have enough wisdom to judge what's good and whats bad for you. Then why should any govt. tell us what to do and what not to do.Why should our vices be punished by them? If you have similar questions then come and discuss it with like minded people from your city.We invite you for the "SFL" colloquium in collaboration with "House of commons" for a day-long collaborative, intellectual dialogue on this topic Register yourself through this link www.sasfl.org/colloquium-svc
