Democracy in South Asia has always been contested, fragile, and deeply intertwined with the region’s colonial past, ethnic diversity, and socio-economic challenges. While democratic institutions were envisioned as instruments of representation, accountability, and inclusivity, the realities in countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal reveal persistent crises. These crises manifest in the erosion of democratic institutions, increasing centralization of power, weak rule of law, corruption, political violence, and the marginalization of minority voices.
Sri Lanka has experienced authoritarian tendencies masked under democratic frameworks, coupled with ethnic conflict and governance breakdown. Bangladesh’s democracy has been plagued by a polarized two-party system, electoral controversies, and shrinking democratic space. Nepal, despite its transition from monarchy to federal democratic republic, continues to struggle with instability, frequent government changes, and challenges of institutionalizing democracy. Together, these cases highlight the fragile foundations of democracy in South Asia, where aspirations often clash with entrenched political culture and structural inequalities.
