Public advisory from Chairman DDMA Lamka, Manipur on forecast of thunderstorm with rain

01/02/2026

Disaster risk can hit suddenly, or be a part of everyday life.

Both intensive and extensive risks can be devastating, but in in different ways.

⚡ Intensive risk refers to high-impact, lower-frequency events such as major earthquakes, cyclones or large river floods, which can trigger sudden and catastrophic losses when people and assets are exposed.

🌧️ Extensive risk refers to lower-impact, high-frequency events such as local floods, storms, fires and drought, whose cumulative effects disrupt services, livelihoods and health, especially in lower-income settings.

📊 Why it matters: Small, recurrent events account for a large share of economic loss, displacement and service disruption, quietly reinforcing poverty and inequality.

Reducing disaster losses means addressing headline disasters as well as the risks that return every season.
